Major League Baseball Ambassodor for Brain Injury Prevention and Recovery

    in Education

Tonight, Ken Collins will talk about his attempt to become Major League Baseball (MLB) Ambassodor for Brain Injury Prevention and Recovery.  Ken has been an active participant in developing community-based servcies for people with brain injuries since 1983 and as a VISTA Volunteer helped to create the first transitional living program in the US for people with brain injuries. The award winning Uhlhorn Apartments opened it's doors in 1990 and remains one of the most cost effective programs in the US to provide brain injury independent living services.  Ken has been active with brain injury prevention and awareness activities since becoming a founding member of the Oregon Head Injury Foundation in 1985.  He has held many positions over the years with city, county, state and national organizations educating people about the consequences of brain injury.  He is currently Vice-Chair of the New Mexico Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) and Program Manager at the San Juan Center for Independence-Gallup office where he provides independent living services and peer support to people/vets with brain injuries in McKinley County.   MLB recently created the Ambassodor for Inclusion and asked former minor league baseball player Billy Bean to take on this responsibility.  FOX Sports reported: Billy Bean was in Portland, Ore., when he got the call. Not the kind of call he once received as a minor-league outfielder, summoning him to the majors. No, a call that was even more significant, the first step toward baseball welcoming Bean, a publicly gay man, back to its family.
Efforts that marked a natural if belated progression for the sport of Jackie Robinson, efforts that led to Bean being named baseball’s ambassador for inclusion on July 15.  Bean, 50, had retired from baseball after the 1995 season.

Another Fork in the Road: Panel - Behavioral & Emotional Changes & Brain Injury

    in Education

One of the most difficult aftereffects of brain injury is losing oneself. Depending on the injury and which part of the brain is impacted determines the type of emotional and behavioral change in one’s personality. A person who was agreeable, complacent, reasonable, and calm before the injury may change drastically to one who is violent, depressive, or struggles with anger management. These effects are not easy for others to understand – BUT, have you thought how difficult it must be for the survivor? My panel, M. S. survivor, Lisa Dryer and Brain Injury survivor, GeorgeAnna Bell will join me to discuss this sensitive topic.

Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College plans, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slip from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating. But as Yogi Berra once said, "If you come to a fork in the road, take it." Life is all about choices!

She will be discussing her son Joseph's life story, playing sports, CTE which led to years of depression and ultimately, his suicide. Joseph's brother Seth will join us, since they played sports all through their childhood together. Jeff Sebell, an author and TBI victim discusses how to function adequately.

    in Radio

Jeff Sebell will talk from his 1st-hand knowledge of someone living with a TBI. He will discuss situations that have presented themselves over the years for him. and will continue to do so. He will talk about the differences he has found in the initial recovery period vs. the later stages of living with a TBI. What questions do we need to ask and how do we respond to different types of situations. This is something every brain damaged individual must come to terms with for themselves, and the answers may be as unique as the various people involved. When we think that we are acting correctly, we may or may not be (in the perception of those aroud us); and its crucial to resolve the conflicts within our own minds, as well as those within the non-head injured world in which we live. This show will focus on the style and writings of one individual living in the "normal universe" with an abnormal condition. This is something that plagues every TBI victim daily and the solutions are not obvious. This will apply to all sorts of conflicts and promises to be a tale we need to listen to!

I'm Thea Malfetti, an intense animal lover and a huge advocate for healthy lifestyle living.  It all began with my first pets, Brutus the great, big, beautiful German Shepard, he resided with Tasha, a magically, sly, Angora cat..those two tagged-teamed their way straight into my heart and that began my love affair with animals!

I was determined to find a way, a better way and that launched me into the subject of animal nutrition and alternative care.
My certification is from the American Council of Animal Naturopathy under the guidance of holistic veterinarians Dr. Kim Bloomer and Dr. Jeannie Thomason.
As an animal health consultant, author, radio and TV show host, I know there is a better way to care for and support the health and vitality of our pets; improve their immune system and extend the health of their lives for as long as possible!
