    INDIE-POP BAND, CABLE CAR

    in Music

A timeless fusion of pop, R&B and rock, Cable Car’s music oozes passion and sex appeal. Defying genre lines and stereotypes, these lads prefer their music to be described as “new vintage” and “tragic sexy” - and rightly so. Most of their music describes the dark side of being in love. The band gracefully delivers a musical jambalaya of all of the most popular sounds of the last couple decades, all while adding a current mainstream twist and their own original style. With voices comparable to warm honey or a perfect morning brew, they continue to capture hearts across the country.   After long nights in the studio, Cable Car is anxious and excited to reveal to the world the magic they’ve been recording. Influenced by a lot of the local talent and major artists, the band has been working diligently to promote their new EP Ride, produced by Mike Pappas. Ride is equipped with a diverse subject matter, all inspired by love and relationships.

Deni Bonet, the acclaimed singer, songwriter and violinist behind the brand-new, intentionally uplifting album, It’s All Good. Known for her work with Cyndi Lauper, R.E.M., Sarah McLachlan, Robyn Hitchcock, and many others, Bonet’s third solo release is a blast of energy, enthusiasm and a tonic for the troubled soul.
On It’s All Good, Bonet is joined by an array of high-profile collaborators including R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Fred Schneider of The B-52s, John Wesley Harding, ex-Wings drummer Steve Holley, Young Fresh Fellow/R.E.M. associate Scott McCaughey, and even Broadway star Mary Testa. She also turned to a well-known name, former Bongo frontman and baroque pop savant Richard Barone, to produce the album.

    Indie Books #84 (Grier Cooper)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.

Author Grier Cooper joins me this week to talk about her book: Wish, (Indigo Dreams Series Book 1)

For Indigo Stevens, ballet classes at Miss Roberta’s ballet studio offer the stability and structure that are missing from her crazy home life. At almost 16, she hopes this is the year she will be accepted into the New York School of Ballet so she can begin her ballet dance career. First she must prove she’s ready, and that means ignoring Jesse Sanders, the cute boy with dimples who is definitely at the top of Miss Roberta’s List of Forbidden Things for Dancers.

But Jesse is the least of Indigo’s concerns. When she discovers her mom is an alcoholic, it simultaneously explains everything and heaps more worry on Indigo’s shoulders. As her mom’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Indigo fights to maintain balance, protect her younger brothers from abuse, and keep her mother from going over the edge. But life with an alcoholic parent is unpredictable. When the violence at home escalates, Indigo realizes she can no longer dance around the issue. At the risk of losing everything, she must take matters into her own hands before it’s too late.

Goodbye, Sábado Gigante: The Manero Pop Podcast, Episode 4

    in Pop Culture

You've probably heard the news by now: the variety TV show Sábado Gigante will end his record-breaking 53-year run on the air come September.

The show started in Chile in 1962, but after moving to Miami in 1986, it became an institution of Latino television in the United States, and a cultural touchstone of the immigrant experience.

But Sábado Gigante was not free of controversy: even when the immediate reactions after the news of the show's cancelation broke were cries of "devastation," as they days went a very different reaction came to light. Several critics expressed their hatred of a show they considered "racist and misogynistic.

Here, José Manuel Simián and Marcelo Báez discuss the impact of the Sábado Gigante on Latino pop culture, and interview blogger Laura Martínez and former member of the show's Clan Infantil, Paz Zárate.

UPDATE: During his interview with Laura Martínez, José Manuel Simián made an implicit reference to Univisión's host Fernando Fiore, who is no longer with the network.
