What is real, and what is a mirage? Can something be a cost effective strategic option, or a fool's errand?
As outlined by our guests U.S. Naval War College Associate Professors James R. Holmes and Toshi Yoshihara in their latest work in the periodical Asian Security: An Ocean Too Far: Offshore Balancing in the Indian Ocean; the United States is beset by war weariness after over a decade of war and a half century plus of global commitments.
It is seductive to think of retiring from continental Eurasia, but if history calls us back - returning in times of systemic conflict would be problematic – even in the relatively accessible rimlands of Western Europe and East Asia.
In a part of the world with the planet's largest democracy - offshore balancing is close to impossible in the Indian Ocean.
As it turns out, offshore balancing in the Indian Ocean may be no balancing at all.

Join us for a show with New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) filmmakers Shonali Bose (Margarita, With a Straw) and Vibha Bakshi (Daughters of Mother India) and actor Kalki Koechlin.
The festival’s opening night film this year is Bose’s “Margarita, With a Straw.” The film is a poignant portrayal of a rebellious young woman with cerebral palsy, played by Kalki Koechlin, who leaves her home in India to study in New York, unexpectedly falls in love and embarks on an exhilarating journey of self-discovery.
Bakshi’s “Daughters of Mother India” is this year’s National Award winner for Best Film on Social Issues under the Non-Narrative category. The documentary focuses on the aftermath of the 2012 Delhi rape incident and India’s ban on the broadcast of the documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin.
The show will feature candid conversations around topics such as the prevalence of women filmmakers today and the role films can play in raising awareness for mental health and women’s safety issues in India.
Hosting the show is SAJA board member Divya Singaravelu.

Slavery had virtually disappeared in Western Europe by the 1500s and it looked to be dying where it existed. Only Spain and Portugal still practiced slavery and in a turn of irony, these were the two countries that led the colonizing effort in the Americas, almost ensuring that slavery would be transported from Europe to the New World.

Gods, men and other beings will lose their doubts, and the torrents of their cravings will be cut off. Free from all misery they will manage to cross the ocean of becoming; and, as a result of his teachings, they will lead a holy life. No longer will they regard anything as their own, they will have no possession, no gold or silver, no home, no relatives! But they will lead the holy life of oneness under his guidance. They will have torn the net of the passions, they will manage to enter into trances, and theirs will be an abundance of joy and happiness, for they will lead a holy life under his guidance.
