"All people with disabilities shall have the option to design, control and direct their own services and funding." This is the aim of the Person-Driven Services Project which is funded by the PA Developmental Disabilities Council and managed by the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. Join us for a discussion on person-driven services and supports with Kristin Ahrens, Policy Director for the Institute on Disabilities. We will talk about what we mean by “person-driven services and supports” and a give summary of the research on this model of service delivery. We will explain the work being done through the cross-disability Person Driven Services Project.
Many people who want to direct their own services have expressed that they need support to direct their own services - help with things like recruiting and managing workers. Many people have also expressed the need for more flexibility in terms of what the funding for services and supports will cover. This is where the Supports Broker and Cash and Counseling can be important for real opportunities for self-direction. We will talk in detail about the role of the Supports Broker and what is happening to make Supports Brokers available. Cash and Counseling (known in PA as "Services My Way") will also be discussed as a possible way to offer more flexibility for what service funding can purchase.
PA Independent Living Radio Show is brought to you every Friday at 12:00 pm EDT/EST by The Arc of Luzerne County. Please consider a donation in support of our work to help improve the quality of life for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and their families.

Durham, NC – Midlife women who develop a sudden case of “brain fog” run to their doctors, fearing early onset dementia or worse. Many are stunned at the diagnosis: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a lifelong condition that is often unmasked when women are on the cusp of menopause, according to Linda Roggli, PCC, an award-winning author, coach and retreat facilitator for ADHD women “40-and-better.”
“Most people think of ADHD as a children’s issue,” said Roggli, who discovered her own ADHD at age 47, “but there are literally millions of adults with ADHD, most of them unaware that their lifelong struggles have a name … and treatment. That’s why I created the ADDiva Network for ADHD women at midlife and beyond. We all need support, community and hope. Today, there are thousands of women across the globe who call themselves ADDivas!”
Though she wears her whimsical trademark ADDiva hat and takes an upbeat approach to adult ADHD, Roggli acknowledges the seriousness of this neurodevelopmental condition. ADHD adults often have trouble with time management, are disorganized with papers and bills, are usually underemployed, endure troubled relationships and have a profound sense of failure. Studies show that women with ADHD may have even more difficulty coping with ADHD than men because of their many roles that require multi-tasking.
“The ADDiva Network encourages women to come out of their dark (and messy) ADHD closets without judgment or shame,” said Roggli. “Through coaching, ADDiva retreats, online forums, webinars and support groups, we rebuild lives. When ADHD women realize that they are more than their ADHD and finally wake up to their full potential, the world shifts. My slogan for ADHD women is: Why are you trying to fit in when you were born to stand out?”
Author and Mafia writer Nicholas Denmon joins us on this episode. Tune in and enjoy!
Nicholas Denmon studied English at the University of Florida. He started story telling from the moment he could talk and has spent a lifetime perfecting the art.
His life has been varied, giving him no shortage of material. Some of his unique experiences include growing up with a schizophrenic mother, having six brothers and sisters (of which he is the middle-younger child), a perfectionist father, an evil step-mother, a college life to rival Tucker Max, and working for politicians on the Presidential as well as local stage. He has been, at times, a devout Catholic, a closet atheist, and an honorary member of the Jewish tribe.
Nick's joy of art knows little in the way of limitations, as he loves unique paintings, music, acting, film, and of course writing.
