"All people with disabilities shall have the option to design, control and direct their own services and funding." This is the aim of the Person-Driven Services Project which is funded by the PA Developmental Disabilities Council and managed by the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. Join us for a discussion on person-driven services and supports with Kristin Ahrens, Policy Director for the Institute on Disabilities. We will talk about what we mean by “person-driven services and supports” and a give summary of the research on this model of service delivery. We will explain the work being done through the cross-disability Person Driven Services Project.
Many people who want to direct their own services have expressed that they need support to direct their own services - help with things like recruiting and managing workers. Many people have also expressed the need for more flexibility in terms of what the funding for services and supports will cover. This is where the Supports Broker and Cash and Counseling can be important for real opportunities for self-direction. We will talk in detail about the role of the Supports Broker and what is happening to make Supports Brokers available. Cash and Counseling (known in PA as "Services My Way") will also be discussed as a possible way to offer more flexibility for what service funding can purchase.
PA Independent Living Radio Show is brought to you every Friday at 12:00 pm EDT/EST by The Arc of Luzerne County. Please consider a donation in support of our work to help improve the quality of life for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and their families.
Thanks for listening!

Ohio native Ryan Katzenbach began working for his local newspaper as a freelance writer at 15 years old. His editors assigned him to a number of tasks, ranging from politics to the local theater and entertainment scene. After moving to California two years later, Ryan began leaning into the production and pre-press side of newspapers, eventually learning every facet of web and offset printing. In 1993, he founded his own advertising and graphic design firm, Kat Advertising. Amityville author Ric Osuna, he entered into a development deal with Sony Pictures Television for an adaptation of Osuna's "The Night The DeFeo's Died: Reinvestigating The Amityville Murders." In January 2006, Katzenbach began shooting "Shattered Hopes: The True Story of the Amityville Murders" as a completely independent venture. The documentary, using Osuna's book as the baseline, began shooting interviews and reenactments. What was intended to be a project taking only a few years from beginning to end morphed into an 8-year quest for the answers behind the infamous Amityville case. The last installment was largely delayed due to talks with Ronald "Butch" DeFeo who ultimately agreed to an interview for the film. The documentary project attracted the attention of the Reelz Channel in the summer of 2014. On October 25th, 2014, the Reelz Channel will debut this adaptation, "High Hopes: The Amityville Horror Murders" as part of their Halloween movie line-up. The Shattered trilogy and the Reelz narrated by Emmy & Golden Globe winning actor Edward Asner. Katzenbach, at present, is working on a documentary about the murder of slain Hollywood PR maven Ronni Chasen. Katzenbach also has a feature film in development.
Making one thing very clear, this is in no way an endorsement, this is an opportunity for a candidate to share their campaign quest with the public...
