This week on the We Grow Ours show, Nick and Don talk “Homesteading”. We have a short segment with Don Westover of Prepperfestaz, letting all of us know about the upcoming prepper expo on October 25th and 26th at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

We also have a question from a listener (sorry for getting off track), and learn about how to make some money with a rabbit business, and homesteading in general. Nick and Don discuss a few ideas that they have for marketing Rabbit and Quail along with making some financial sense of homesteading. It does take hard work, but it is also very rewarding!

Remember we are giving away a 3-teir Rabbit meat system as soon as the Facebook page hits 3000 likes, so go share it for your chance to win!

Ask anyone who has kept a homesteading blog or Youtube channel over the last five years – myself included -- and they will tell you there’s a resurgence happening of folks wanting to get "back to the land", much as there was in the 1970’s. Becoming more self-reliant and sustainable is an aspiration shared by many. Recalling episodes of “The Waltons” or “Little House on the Prairie”, and armed with well-worn copies of “The Encyclopedia of Country Living”, or “Five Acres and Independence”, folks are scouting out property, plotting, planning, and saving up -- dreaming of the day when they can escape from the rat race and simplify their lives. Along with this dream, comes a vision of what life in the country on a small holding will bring and mean. Unfortunately, these expectations are not always grounded in reality. Let’s talk about what you can expect, dispell some common misconceptions, and tuck away those rose-colored glasses. As always, I want you to have success on your journey towards self-reliance while avoiding unnecessary disappointment and disillusion in getting there.

We talk this week about our “Daily” life on the homesteads, how much time we spend doing what we do. We also have a candid conversation about our style of prepping and walk though some concerns that we have about what could turn these into a reality! Politics is part of this show, yet a very small part. We run through what we would do and talk about how we are looking to meet others in our areas and our communities now before things go bad. Fodder, fish and rabbits, a great combo! Nick tells us he will dig a nice septic system in his front yard and why. Don talks about the water and cooling situation in the desert of Arizona. What would you do? We talk about not only how to survive, but thrive.. Sound familiar?

ENVISION THIS: Off-grid, self-sufficient living that includes creative amenities and technology

Peter Baldwin is a homesteading philosopher, pioneer, and entrepreneur.  He supports himself by manufacturing quality traditional and innovative wooden orchard ladders and drums of standard, custom, or traditional design.  He also facilitates drumming circles, sometimes on a community-sized drum, and teaches practical life skills in school-based programs.

We are broadcasting from his amazing eco-cabin in Brooks, Maine, self-built for 1/10 the cost of a standard American home.  Our audio-tour of his homestead will include his farm; wind, solar, and geothermal power; self-built, innovative cool-box and root cellar food storage; hand water pump with water tank above a wood stove for hot water to sink and shower; bucket commode to produce humanure; and home-made laundry machine.

He claims the eco-cabin runs on about ½ hour of muscle power a week!?  It also runs on Peter’s deep philosophical and humane commitment to giving civilization a chance to survive.  He will explain how, once we control our fears of change, we enter a vast frontier of opportunity for humankind.  We can develop greater connection to self and community; safe, secure, sustainable economies; and regional manufacture of goods and services that will provide full employment.

This is one time we really wish we had video as well as audio capabilities, but check out Peter’s pictures at www.blogtalkradio.com/envision-this and his rap video presentation on YouTube: Peter Baldwin: Rapstar Incognito.  Okay, so Peter isn’t really a rapper but he is a star in our book. He lives his motto: “One People, One Earth, One Heartbeat.”

Homesteading and Prepping, what you need and what's nice to have!

The line between homesteading and prepping can be a blurry one. As a matter of course, prepping often leads to homesteading. After all, being able to provide for yourself and your family on a sustainable, renewable level moves a person ever closer to independence and self-reliance – the ultimate prepping! To this end, it's important to have both a knowledge base and various skill sets. But just as important to success or failure on the homestead are the tools one has at their disposal. Some "stuff" is absolutely necessary. Other equipment, while making tasks more manageable and your life a whole lot easier, aren't really necessary and can be purchased later on, as finances permit.

So, let's spend an evening talking about what it takes to equip a homestead, from the farm kitchen to the garden to the barn. Some of the "must haves" might surprise you, as well as items that get relegated the nice-to-have category. Listeners are invited to call in with what prepping or homesteading items they wouldn't be without. Let's compare notes, share opinions, and help each other out in creating a good list of what it takes to create the well-appointed prepper homestead.

There is a lot of interest in being self-sufficient these days. People are looking for information on how to grow and store their own food, provide their own meats, go off-grid with solar setups… get out of the system so to speak. We see a lot of these things in videos and on TV, and it all looks so cool. It seems like such an enjoyable way of life. And it really is. But there is a great deal of work involved, lots of back-breaking labor. In the summer time, it’s often sunup to sundown… so much to do. And the animals and gardens don’t stop eating and growing just because you get tired. As the saying goes, “the show must go on”. So what is it really like on a day to day basis? To get some first-hand accounts about the life of a true homesteader, on this episode of Preparing To Provide I have a very special guest for this show.
