Author of The Evangeline Hunter Bounty Series, Miranda Parker, discusses her novel, "A Good Excuse to Be Bad".

  • Beautiful Butterfly Welcomes Author of Meet the Commodores Sunny Giovanni

    in Lifestyle

In southern Dallas, Texas, Sunny Giovanni-- or "Gio" as she likes to be called-- was born on the fifth day of June in 1989. Born to a mother who was a teacher and a graduate from Texas A&M University you couldn't so much as watch a Disney movie if you hadn't read the book beforehand. Gio has had a very strong history with literature, diversifying from poetry (winning placements in oratorical contests), to thriller short stories as a way to vent her frustrations.

The pen was handed down to her from an older sibling as a means to focus her negative energy and anger into something different but was used as a way to alter her own situations.
As a preteen Gio witnessed how much her writing could touch someone when she left one of her prized spirals in a classroom without knowing. Two weeks after it went missing someone brought it back to her asking for more, letting the young author know that almost everyone she knew read the story, but without knowing it was her in the story she had written.
Sunny Giovanni is an advocate for gay and transgender rights, and says: "You can't help who you are and you damn sure can't help who you love. You should be true to who are rather than to conform and live the ultimate lie and live miserably until the day you die." Credited from the poem she penned "Titanium", modeled after her novel.
Gio is a mother of three children, the founder of Lucid Legends Publishing/ Photography, Kno Joke Entertainment, the host of "We Talk TOO Much Radio" on BlogTalk Radio and blogs on Tumblr under the name "KnoJokeGio". She is a friend to many and prides herself on making a smile out of an extremely horrible day. "It doesn't matter if you're having a bad day... a smile could make everything else seem so small. Crack a joke when someone is hurt and see how fast they cheer up.

REACHING OUT TO STUDENTS THROUGH STUDENT AUTHOR VISITS WITH DEBBIE HILBISH

    in Culture

ENVISION THIS: Reaching out to young people to inspire them to read, write, and create.

Debbie Hilbish is with us to share her vision, passion and mission to inspire students to read, write and create. She reaches out to as many people as possible to share what they do at Student Author Visits, Inc. (SAVI) founded by Larry James, a 70+ great grandfather, artist, writer of music and author of children’s books. Debbie became Chairperson and Secretary at SAVI after retiring from a career with the United States Post Office, publishing books of her poetry, and hosting eight-week authors’ fairs at The Reader’s Oasis book store in Quartzsite AZ.

SAVI started because “America’s economy began to fail in 2007 and millions of citizens are still struggling, plus the fact that the income disparity gap in our country has widened every year for at least the last twenty years has brought us to the point where it’s impossible for many parents to purchase books for their children.” It is a free program provided to elementary fourth grade classes and boys and girls clubs in selected areas. At the beginning of each visit, Larry introduces himself and thanks the students for inviting him. He reads the first chapter of one of the chapter books he has written and illustrated. The children than get to listen to one of the age appropriate songs on our music cd. The question and answer segment is next. Children ask good questions like: How do you write, illustrate, or publish a book? The program usually last about an hour.  At the end of our visit each student receives a FREE SAVI PACK which consists of: 1 copy of the signed chapter book, 1 CD with 8 (eight) age appropriate songs, and a BOOKWORM BUDDY BUTTON.

Guest - Michelle Fondin author of "The Wheel of Healing with Ayurveda"

    in Motivation

Ayurveda, the “science of life,” is a complete wellness system that includes all that we associate with medical care — prevention of disease, observation, diagnosis, and treatment — as well as self-care practices that are generally absent from Western medicine.

Author Michelle Fondin discovered this 5,000-year-old tradition when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Ayurveda resonated with her because she was searching for ways to understand why she had become ill and actively participate in her healing — rather than simply turning it over to experts and protocols. Join us as Michelle shares her expertise with us!

Michelle S. Fondin is the author of The Wheel of Healing with Ayurveda. She holds a Vedic Master Certificate from the Chopra Center and is a member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association and Yoga Alliance. She treats clients at her Ayurvedic Path center, speaks and offers workshops, and lives in Herndon, Virginia.

Episode 84: Chat with Author Jennifer Snow

    in Writing

Jennifer Snow's a traditionally published romance author who is living the dream: she's been published by more than one publisher, and she's branching out into the hot sub-genre, sports romance. In her home country of Canada, though, there's apparently some circles who still are all about "literary" fiction. Jennifer and I talk about her experience writing for more than one publisher and how those editing experiences differ. Will we see her on the indie side of publishing? We just might.

Military Monday with John D. Gresham and USNI Press Author Charles Neimeyer

    in History

The War of 1812, was one of America's "small and forgotten" conflicts, much like the Korea in the 20th century. Ill advised, and really unnecessary for both Great Britain and the young United States of America (which was less than 50 years old at the time), the War of 1912 was a conflict that gained neither side much benefit, and diverted badly needed resources from other endeavors. Nevertheless, there were a number of intriguing and important lessons to be learned from the conflict, none more interesting than those derived from the British Chesapeake Campaign of 1814. A British squadron under command of Adm. Cochrane, raised habit for most of 1814 from the Virginia Tidewater to the waters around Baltimore, doing a surprising amount of damage and raising havoc against the seemingly hapless Americans. The British squadron took and burned Hampton, VA, portions of Washington, DC, and other towns along the bay, eventually only being stopped by the heroic defense of Baltimore and bombardment of Fort McHenry. It is a fascinating story, little known by most Americans, which almost went unnoticed during the recent bicentennial of the War of 1812.

To learn more about the War of 1812 and the 1814 Chesapeake Campaign, tune into this week's edition of Military Monday (#MilitaryMonday on the Writestream Radio Network (@Writestream)) at 1 PM EDT. Author, historian, journalist, documentary filmmaker, and host John D. Gresham (@greshamj01) has invited Naval Institute Press (@USNIBooks) author LCOL. Charles Neimeyer. , USMC (Ret.) to discuss his new book, War in the Chesapeake. His book is a new single-volume history of the campaign, and will prove enlightening for both academics and those new to the story.
