    Remembering Carnival Traditions, Part II

    in Culture

The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952, carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean.

A month-long series of dazzling pageants and talent shows is held to choose royalty to rein over the festival. Fun events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest and Toddlers Derby entertain everyone at the festivities.

A series of elimination contests to crown top performers are called Calypso Tents. Calypsonions offer satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians. Other popular events held during Carnival is j'ouvert, a morning jump up, a food fair presenting the islands’ best traditional eats and a competition to crown the King and Queen of the parade troupes.

A children's and adult’s parade close the lively month with brilliantly costumed and decorated troupes and floats.

Gilbert House Fellowship #26: Exodus 22-26

    in Paranormal

Our weekly Bible study continues (live this week, we hope) with the 22nd chapter of Exodus.  This is where Moses begins to receive the Law from Yahweh and the instructions on how to build the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant.  Like most things in the Bible, it's a lot more interesting when you start digging into the details!

Because it's the first Sunday of the month, we will celebrate communion with you, so be ready with wine or juice and unleavened bread or a cracker.

Join us live Sunday morning at 10:30 AM Central Time (UTC -5) or afterward in the archive!

    MAINTAINING FOCUS AS KINGDOM BUILDERS

    in Christianity

    "Maintaining Focus As Kingdom Builders"

This is our theme for the year 2015 and in this month of May we will hear teachings from ministers of Wholeness Empowerment Ministry International encouraging us in the Word. We must establish and maintain focus on that which is vital to God - building His Kingdom and not our own. The distractions and temptations to focus only on ourselves are very great in this age. However when we press into the Word which ignites true worship these things fall away.

Join us as we encourage you in the scriptures to set your sights on God and exhaust yourself in pleasing Him alone.
