HEMP: Addictive, Legal & Still Going Strong After 20 Years with Barnett Helzberg

    in Entrepreneur

The Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program (HEMP) is still helping Kansas City's entrepreneurs build bigger and better companies. HEMP pairs seasoned business owners with the program's mentees translating into an average growth of 43 percent. In the past 20 years HEMP has helped more than 300 local business owners who in turn have generated close to $750 million dollars in economic activity. On this episode of Smart Companies Radio KC, host Kelly Scanlon visits with Barnett Helzberg Jr., the organization’s founder and Bill Hartnett, chairman of the mentoring committee and president-elect of HEMP.

Hemp will be celebrating in a big way in November with engineer, inventor, and computer programmer Steve Wozniak as the keynote speaker. Wozniak is best known as one of the founders of Apple and inventor of the Apple II computer.

Closing the "Opportunity Gap" Through Mentoring Programs

    in Training

How is it that some people wind up on top of the social heap and others wind up on the bottom? This question, which sociologists refer to as social mobility, has been studied for decades. Recently, the prominent sociologist Robert Putnam has published a new book that examines social mobility, income equality and the American Dream.

What he uncovers is disturbing. Putnam says that social mobility is poised to plunge in the years ahead, shattering the American Dream.

Why is this so and what can be done about it?

On Friday, May 29, at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) I will be discussing this topic with my guest Mary Fernandez, the President of MentorNet, a division of Great Minds in STEM™. MentorNet implements a national, guided, one-to-one mentoring program that matches STEM students with STEM professionals in high-quality, virtual mentorships. By the way, STEM is the acronym for science, technology, engineering and math.

This podcast is produced in cooperation with the University of Massachusetts at Boston's Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring and Vince Reardon.

  • A Conversation with David Shapiro, the President and CEO of Mentor

    in Training

What is the state of mentoring in the U.S. today? What does the landscape look like? What are one or two of the important trends driving mentoring right now? And what can you, the listener, do to impact mentoring for the better?

My guest on Thursday, July 30, at 2:00 p.m. (EDT) i’s uniquely qualified to answer these and many more pressing questions about mentoring. He is David Shapiro, the president and CEO of MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. MENTOR is the unifying champion for expanding quality youth mentoring relationships in the United States. Empowering Women Through Mentoring Relationships

    in Training

Here are some sobering statistics I will discuss with my guest Alison Martin-Books:

57% of women are targeted for workplace bullying.
Women make up 51% of the U.S. population but only hold 16% of seats in Congress.
Only 2% of women think they’re beautiful.
A girl is bullied every 7 minutes on the playground or in the classroom.
90% of women want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance.

Alison Martin-Books, the founder of the Mentoring Women’s Network, will explain how mentoring women can empower them at work and in school.

The Mentoring Women's Network is a national nonprofit organization that supports mentoring programs for women. In addition, the organization has created a proprietary training and software program to aid in the matching and scheduling of mentors and protégés. Alison is also the author of “Landing on My Feet: Learning to Lead Through Mentoring."
