ACA Update by Health Economist Paul Keckley

    in Health

Five years ago, the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. And today, we have Navigant’s Paul Keckley looking at the goals of the law and discussing what’s working and what’s ahead for the ACA.

    So Is It Working?

Has it increased access to coverage? Yes, at least for some, and at least for now.

Has it reduced costs? It’s too soon to know.

Has it improved the public’s understanding of the U.S. health system? Regrettably no.

    What’s Ahead?

The stakes in the states are higher

The winners and losers are shaking out

Innovators with value-driven solutions are disrupting the status quo

The ACA will be a spotlight issue in Campaign 2016

Tune in to listen to more of what Paul Keckley has to say with our host Patricia Salber (@docweighsin).

Destination Health - #23 - We're staying on the No Grain Train and learning more

    in Health

I will admit that my comfort food of choice would be a warm loaf of crusty bread (yes the whole loaf) and some cold butter to slather (good word!), watch it melt into all the tiny, delectable holes and enjoy. I did use to do what they say is healthy and use 100% whole grain bread....or swap out my white rice for brown rice....and now what?! We are finding more and more research that the grains - especially what has been done to them through  mass-production may be the root of so many of our health issues. Hop on board the No Gran Train and join us as we delve into this issue a little more.

10 Things You Can Do To Feel More Calm

    in Health

I'm inspired to talk about this topic today because for the last few months I have been living in a way that has set me up to be very anxious and depressed right now!

But I know exactly what I was doing (and not doing) that has led me to feel this way.

It's a little more complicated for me because I've moved across the country and still feel like a foreigner in this new city.

But, no matter why you are feeling anxious or depressed, there are lifestyle tweaks you can make that help with every case of depression and anxiety.

So many of us are experiencing anxiety - anxiety over our careers, finances, relationships, health, life direction, etc.

Am I making the right choice?

    Am I forgetting something?

    I don't like my job.

    I don't have enough money.

Should I be more like them?

Why aren't I as happy as I thought I would be?

    What's wrong with me?

What should I do with my life?

    Etc.

Being in a state of depression, anxiety and fight-or-flight is not a great place to be on a regular basis, for your health or your happiness.

We want to spend more time with the parasympathetic nervous system, or the "feed and breed" mode.

I have ten lifestyle habits for you to choose from that you can start doing on a regular basis. They will calm you down, get you into a happy place, and help you to see your life more clearly. You don't have to do everything - just a few - and you'll start feeling better very soon.
