Every 2 minutes someone in the U.S. is the victim of sexual assault, with more than 207,750 victims each year. More than 17 million people have been the victim of sexual abuse of some kind and most victims knew their perpetrator. We take on this painful topic to help young victims know that they can recover, that they are not to blame, and there are resources available to help them. We also want to let young people know how to keep safe from attack, wherever they are.
We will have two very courageous young women on the show with us. Teri Taylor is a young woman in her 30s from New Jersey, who has healed from sexual abuse as a youth and has gone on to publish her story in a book to help others find hope. Our youth guest, 20, is from Florida and is recovering from her abuse as a thriving young woman. She was able to send her assailant to jail, and deal with his release. Both women will share their stories of strength and how to help other young women and men protect themselves from attack.
We invite listeners to call in and share their stories of overcoming abuse or to call for information on how to get out of an abusive situation. We will share resources such as hotlines and how to support a friend in an abusive situation.
This episode is one full of hope and encouragement for those who have suffered the devastation of child sexual abuse and of valuable information for parents to keep their children safe and away from predators. My guest Dave Pittman is the Executive Director of "Together We Heal" and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. Through his organization he provides counseling and guidance for those who suffer from the trauma of childhood sexual abuse and works to educate the public and expose the sexual predators methods. We will be discussing how he brings healing to those who have been victimized this way and what parents can do to protect their children.
This is our annual show dedicated to addressing the very taboo issue of Sexual Abuse. We will not only speak on the issue but speak about how we can begin to heal and prevent this trauma in our community. So please join me and our awesome panelists for this powerful show.

Sometimes the memories are too much to hold inside. Sometimes the pain just gets too big. Medicating our pain as survivors of child sexual abuse is one way to survive.
But as long as we are addicted, we will never thrive. Addiction kills relationships, careers, healing and spiritual growth. Addiction takes the life out of us and returns the destruction of all we hold dear in exchange for killing the pain.
David Pittman, director of Together We Heal, knows both the pain of abuse AND the pain of addiction. And now he knows the joy of helping others get free from both. Join David and Misa as they bring hope for healing from addiction and child abuse.

Tonight's special guest is Tracey Heisler, from New Jersey, executive director of the CASA program in Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren Counties. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) recruits, screens, trains, and supervises community volunteers to act as advocates in court for children living in the foster care system, giving them a voice that might not otherwise be heard. Mrs. Heisler, herself the mother of 8 children, has degrees in Psychology with an emphasis in Juvenile Justice and Forensics. She came to this work as a result of her mother and uncle's experiences of growing up in the foster care system in upstate New York. It is her life's mission to improve the quality of life for these children while in care and to facilitate their transition to their "forever family," whether through reunification, adoption, or kinship legal guardianship, as quickly as possible. The role of CASA is to advocate for children in out-of-home placement. The CASA is appointed by the Family Court Judge. The volunteer must read all of the child's records and interview people in the child's life and then makes recommendations to the court. All volunteers must be screened, fingerprinted and must agree to a federal, state and local background check before being accepted into a CASA 30 hour training session. All volunteer must be over the age of 21 and be able to provide their own transportation.
