Policy solutions and hope. That is what I hope to offer. I share with you the keynote speech from Friday evening's training event, Peggy Flanagan, Exec. Dir of Children's Defense Fund.
Yesterday it was announced that the Grand Jury in Ferguson decided to not indict the officer responsible for the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager who was shot six times by that police officer who claimed that he feared for his life.
A little less than 8,245 days ago I wrote a poem entitled, "Never Again" because I was in Los Angeles at a Laker game the night the riots started. And, as the days went on, I was getting a little tired of the pundits giving space to Pres. Bush who called the rioters, "thugs and crooks."
Rioting is wrong, but let's keep King's words in mind as we witness the reaction to the decision in Ferguson.
Martin Luther King --- as quoted by Amy Goodman on Democracy's Now coverage posted on youtube.com today: "It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard."

Jane Elliott is an American former schoolteacher, recognized most prominently as an anti-racism activist and educator. She is also known as a feminist and LGBT activist. Elliott created the famous "blue-eyed/brown-eyed" exercise, first
done with third-grade school children in the 1960s, which later became the basis for her career in diversity training.
The exercise was conducted the day following Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. The purpose of the exercise was
to try to teach her students the effects of being a minority. Her exercise, and the subsequent controversy, became the basis for the television documentaries Eye of the Storm (1970) and A Class Divided (1985). Elliott was also recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education and many other awards.

Knee jerk/emotional response is a part of it but let's also consider that the 'Authority' usually safeguard the important things which limits targets of oppression so that emotion still needs an outlet. Often times it is the oppressed boxed into their own areas that have that 'knee jerk' response.
Without some training and very good leadership that excess energy erupts in its primeval form often in our own communities. Let us also remember that there are always opportunists who have no emotional ties to the righteous cause who act as provocateurs.
I am suggesting that our communities are devoid of good and sustained leadership.
This is by design.
We know from our High School Physics classes that nature abhors a vacuum and it will be filled.
Good leadership in the Black community is a vacuum. We need to fill it with people of our choosing and reject those given to us by the same ones that oppress us.
Ask yourself, "who is my community leader?" Then ask yourself is that person working towards the community's best interest? We have a role to play. Let's play our role
