Pell Mellers, Race and Memory in a Carolina Pocosin, Paul Johnson

    in Books

A Genealogical Quest in the Triracial South

What began as genealogical research into the author's ancestry soon grew into a fascinating tale with lessons for us all. Among his ancestors, Johnson uncovered: unpunished murderers, infidelities that produced stronger families than formal marriages, entire units of North Carolinians who fought and died to preserve the Union in the Civil War. The tale holds enough plot twists for a half-dozen novels.

But most of all, it reveals in a personal way what molecular anthropologists have been trying to explain all along. The fact is that we are all of multiple ancestries. Inhabitants of the New World are a genetic mix of three great populations, Native Americans, European colonists, and African slaves. Nowhere is this more vivid than in Pell Mellers, the story of one man's search for his tangled roots.
"In Paul Johnson's engaging journey into his roots in Bertie County, North Carolina, he discovers an intriguing family of pocosin dwellers who personify the South's multiracial heritage and its political minorities, including Unionists and the original Buffalo Soldiers. Pell Mellers is a solid contribution to the history of the "other South" that complements the well-traveled mainstream, illustrating our rich and textured past." -- Lindley S. Butler, author of Pirates, Privateers, and Rebel Raiders of the Carolina Coast..Read full description of episode here!

Books of Excellence with Author Bonnie Kaye

    in Books

Tonight Bonnie Kaye welcomes Lorraine Pestell, author of the six part serialized book "A Life Singular." Lorraine was born in London and has had a successful career as an Information Technology professional in the UK, US, Europe, Singapore, and more recently Australia.  She currently resides in Melbourne, Victoria.

Although working full-time, Lorraine is a passionate volunteer for several organizations, including serving on the Boards of non-profit organizations, being a mentor for The Smith Family's iTrack program and providing project management assistance to The School Volunteer Program.  She finds that volunteering time and energy to those less fortunate is an effective antidote to life-long depression and the symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

The idea for "A Life Singular" originated when Lorraine was 14 years old, and the story has continued to develop since then.  However, three years ago, a new element of the plot triggered a sudden urge to complete the novel, and since then the story has evolved into six separate parts. The book tells the story of a successful celebrity writing his autobiography after the tragic loss of his wife.

In essence a love story, the central themes of the "A Life Singular"  serial are triumph over mental illness, the choices we make between right and wrong, the relentless passage of time and how each affects the other.  Some of life's lessons are harder to learn, and some amazing opportunities easier to take.  The trick is always to understand the consequences of our choices, before it's too late...

This is a program for independent authors who are part of the Books of Excellence Coop. Other independent authors are welcomed as time allows.

The Author Chat Show with Lynda D. Brown

    in Books

Author Gary Rodriguez will be my guest on Sunday, Dec. 14th. We'll be chatting about his new book, Escape Through the Wilderness.

    About the book:

Escape Through The Wilderness is a timely reminder that children's adventure stories remain ever popular and this is one that deserves to grab the spotlight. A full on attention grabber from the start, Rodriguez spins his debut in endearing prose, his plot exciting, inventive and wholly convincing in its implementation, with plenty of unpredicted twists and turns along the way. Undeniably, a story about friendship, his young protagonists are ably observed with well-crafted personas which allow room for growth as their peril evolves. It’s a splendid telling that will certainly engage the imaginations of his young readers. There’s suspense, plenty of tension and gratifyingly dark overtures which children will lap up, but it never feels rushed with every chapter leaving the reader hungry for more. On cursory reflection it is simply a cracking story, but the thematic undertones reflect the loss of innocence and the fundamental issue of survival which would be invaluable for parent-child discussion.

    About the author:

My name is Gary Rodriguez, and I live in California. I'm the president of LeaderMetrix Inc., a consulting company that specializes in senior-level executive coaching, organizational development, and conflict resolution.
Previously, I worked for eighteen years in the radio business as an executive where I spent several years as one of the original managers of Infinity Broadcasting.

Sacred Sunday~Acts 25/Paul in court. Agrippa listens.

    in Paranormal

Welcome Church! We are here every Sunday to read the Bible, tell personal stories and pray together because when two or more are gathered.....In a non-judgemental down to earth format. God bless you every one! Today we are reading Acts Chapter 25.

As soon as Festus takes charge, he makes a little trip to Jerusalem. The Jewish authorities there chew his ear off about Paul.
The religious authorities want Paul transferred back to Jerusalem (where they can finish up their murder/death/kill plot). We're guessing they gave up on the whole not-eating-until-Paul-is-dead thing.
But Festus is all like, No, come to Caesarea and we'll totally do a trial. Dude, we just did that two years ago. Roman bureaucracy is the worst.
About a week and a half later, everyone is back in Caesarea and it's trial time.
The Jewish guys from Jerusalem say a bunch of completely untrue stuff about Paul. Typical.
Then it's Paul's turn. His defense: not guilty.
Festus says that since it sounds like they're all disputing over Jewish religious stuff, maybe Paul should just head down to Jerusalem and face trial there (maybe then the council members can kill Paul and Festus can cross one thing off his to-do list).
But Paul says he's appealing to the emperor's tribunal in Rome. Darn. He's headed up to the highest court in the land. He hasn't done anything wrong to the Jewish people, so why should they try him? To the emperor it is!

    St. Fidelis

    in Religion

Rebroadcast of the long running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour", a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org

St. Fidelis - A former lawyer who left his profession to become a Capuchin Franciscan priest, Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen has his liturgical memorial on April 24.

Leaving his legal practice behind, Mark decided to give his life directly to the service of Christ and the Church. In short order he received ordination as a priest, and joined the Capuchin Franciscans in Freiburg.

During 1614 a Swiss Catholic bishop had sought help from the Capuchins, to restore the faith and counteract the spread of Calvinist Protestantism. In 1621, Fidelis was sent on the mission. He brought just four items: a Bible, a prayer book, a crucifix and a copy of the Capuchin rule.

The winter of 1621-22 was a busy period of preaching, instruction and theological disputation for the Franciscan priest. He preached not only in the pulpits of Catholic churches, but also in public places, and even in the meeting-places of the Calvinists themselves. Some Swiss Protestants responded with hostility, but many others were also brought back to the Church.

Like many cases of religious persecution during this time, Fidelis’ treatment at the hands of the Calvinists did not stem exclusively from doctrinal disagreement. National and cultural tensions also contributed, with many Swiss Protestants suspecting that the Catholic mission was part of an Austrian plot against their nation.

Fidelis' life bridged the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, a time of religious conflict in Western Europe. He died at the hands of a mob while preaching in Switzerland, where he had gone to combat the Calvinist heresy.

    "The Two-Way Troll Bridge"

    in Lifestyle

SPONSORED BY MARK PITTMAN--The news is buzzing with racial tension--specifically in the law and order department. The atrocious, still-rising count of African-Americans losing their lives to a nationwide vigilante police force is the majority subject, and the mass-injection of Black celebrity "take-down" scandals are a very close second. Equally conspicuous in the media is the transparent plot to "prove their point" about ill perceptions of African-Americans, while justifying the senseless killing, overinflated prison sentences and unfair disciplinary measures used on Black offenders, via the use of iconic Black figures who tone down the true state of racism in the world. Bill Cosby's multiple rape allegations by White America. as well as the exonerations of both Darrren Wilson and the officers involved in the choking death of Eric Garner being sanctioned by Charles Barkley on national television are a few examples. And right in the midst of the heated protests, the rage against the police departments, and the politically charged battles on these matters, comes a mass infusion of do-good "Santacops" and "community service officers". Distractions? Call in tonight at 10:30 pm EST at 347-327-9967 with your thoughts.
