Legacy Of 1804 with New Film on Maurice Bishop and Grenada Revolution

    in Culture

Host Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com and Michelle Materre, founder of Creatively Speaking Film Series and host of Creativey Speaking on the Air  welcome Bruce Paddington, maker of the documentary Forward Ever.  The film investigates the Grenadian revolution of 1979 which culminated in the killing of Maurice Bishop and several of his colleagues in 1983. (Bruce is with us for the first half hour.)

We are then joined by Trinidadian-American trade unionist Roger Toussaint and cultural activist Martin Felix, who came of age in Grenada during the revolution, to explore aspects of this oft neglected chapter of Caribbean history. How was this movement for self-determination launched in the pre-social media era? Why did Reagan take exception to the building of an international airport in Grenada? Did US involvement start at the post-killing invasion or was the Grenadian movement for self-determination infiltrated and destabilized?

Originally aired on Creatively Speaking On the Air June 18, 2014.

Forward Ever will be screening FREE Friday June 20 at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn at 6PM and again at 4PM Saturday June 21 at Maisles Theater in Harlem.

    The Real Meaning of Thanksgiving

    in Lifestyle

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. President of the United States, George Washington proclaimed the first nation-wide thanksgiving celebration in America on November 26, 1789, "as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many favors of Almighty God". In modern times the President of the United States, issues a proclamation, “pardoning” a turkey to ensures that it will spend the duration of its life roaming freely on farmland. American public school romanticizes Thanksgiving Day telling stories of pilgrims and “Indians” celebrating together, sharing harvested crops and cooked wild game.  T

In Canada, second Monday of October in Canada is Thanksgiving Day. The history of Thanksgiving Day for the Canadian is a celebration and gratefulness for explorers surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms and icebergs to reach safety in Canada

In the West Indian island of Grenada, there is a national holiday known as Thanksgiving Day which is celebrated on October 25 marking the anniversary of the deposition and execution of Grenadian Prime Minister Maurice Bishop.

Thanksgiving is celebrated in Liberia on the first Thursday of November. In 1820, with the return of released enslaved Africans to the western banks on the continent of Africa from the post-civil war country of the United States, the repatriated African, freed black American slaves, inculcated into the nation of Liberia as ( Americo-Liberian).

The Netherlands celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the morning of the American Thanksgiving Day, fourth Thursday of November, since many of the Pilgrims who settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts came from the Netherlands.
