Grammy-winning vocalist Ahrel Lumzy, a member of D’Angelo & the Vanguard, relies on his excellent gospel pedigree to tap into his soulful, funky solo material. The nephew of the American Gospel Quartet Convention Hall of Fame-inducted Lumzy Sisters and the son of a veteran gospel and soul singer, Ahrel said he relies on all his ancestors taught as he prepares to embark on a solo tour.
“My aunties not only were a big influence on me but also the American Idol winner Fantasia, especially my Aunt Chequita, the lead singer of the Lumzy Sisters,” Ahrel said. “But my biggest influence is my father, Ernie Lumzy. He was the first man I ever heard sing. He sounded like Al Green, but then he could turn around and sing like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. He was first person to tell me that I could use my voice to be anything that I want to be.” That good advice led Ahrel to recently win a Best R&B Album Grammy for his vocal contributions to D’Angelo & the Vanguard’s “Black Messiah” LP and a Best R&B Song for its hit single, “Really Love.”
Ahrel said he was confident that D’Angelo & the Vanguard would win Grammys but still was shocked and in awe when his name was called. “It was definitely a high,” he said. “Then it really hit, I’m a Grammy winner. Being respected like that was really cool and nice.”
