Nashville makes a huge presence at The GRAMMYs, not just in the Country category, but Rock, Americana and Alternative as well, plus several of the major categories. Matt and Shawn discuss the awards and performances and highlight our Nashville presence at music's biggest night!
And this week's #NUArtist is Humming House! The spotlight on Nashville, with its musical values and timeless traditions, is currently bright. And no band embodies what’s right about 21st century Nashville more completely than this quintet. It’s the way they weave together threads of Music City’s folk, soul, and bluegrass legacies. It’s in the inspirational and revealing songwriting. It’s in their acoustic instrumentation, presenting mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar and bass in fresh roles. It’s in the pleasant tension between rousing energy and nuanced arrangements. And it’s in the voices, with two complimentary stylists up front and backed by the full band’s rapturous harmonies.
Did you miss last year's classic Post Fourth of July "Ask Dedan" Special, where we discussed: the BET Awards, T.I./Tiny/Floyd Mayweather and the importance of respecting your mate, how to know when you’re being string along, the difference between sexy and hoeish summer attire, thirsty men with nothing better to do than give insecure women compliments on Instagram, the Beyonce & Jay Z On the Run tour, and MANY other topics? Grammy-winning vocalist Ahrel Lumzy, a member of D’Angelo & the Vanguard, relies on his excellent gospel pedigree to tap into his soulful, funky solo material. The nephew of the American Gospel Quartet Convention Hall of Fame-inducted Lumzy Sisters and the son of a veteran gospel and soul singer, Ahrel said he relies on all his ancestors taught as he prepares to embark on a solo tour.
“My aunties not only were a big influence on me but also the American Idol winner Fantasia, especially my Aunt Chequita, the lead singer of the Lumzy Sisters,” Ahrel said. “But my biggest influence is my father, Ernie Lumzy. He was the first man I ever heard sing. He sounded like Al Green, but then he could turn around and sing like Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye. He was first person to tell me that I could use my voice to be anything that I want to be.” That good advice led Ahrel to recently win a Best R&B Album Grammy for his vocal contributions to D’Angelo & the Vanguard’s “Black Messiah” LP and a Best R&B Song for its hit single, “Really Love.”
Ahrel said he was confident that D’Angelo & the Vanguard would win Grammys but still was shocked and in awe when his name was called. “It was definitely a high,” he said. “Then it really hit, I’m a Grammy winner. Being respected like that was really cool and nice.”
