Talia Carner was the publisher of Savvy Woman magazine. A former adjunct professor at the Long Island University School of Management and a marketing consultant to Fortune 500 companies, she was also a volunteer counselor and lecturer for the Small Business Administration and a member of United States Information Agency’s (USIA) missions to Russia. She participated in the 1995 International Women’s Conference in Beijing, where she sat on economic panels and helped develop political campaigns for Indian and African women. Ms. Carner’s first novel, PUPPET CHILD, was listed in “The Top 10 Favorite First Novels 2002” and launched a nationwide legislation–The Protective Parent Reform Act–which became the platform for two State Senatorial candidates. CHINA DOLL made Amazon’s bestsellers list and served as the platform for Ms. Carner’s presentation at the U.N. in 2007 about infanticide in China—the first ever in U.N. history. Her latest published novel, JERUSALEM MAIDEN, (HarperCollins, 2011,) won the Forward National Literature Award in the “historical fiction” category. In June 2015, HarperCollins will release Carner’s newest novel, HOTEL MOSCOW, which tells the riveting story of the daughter of Holocaust survivors who travels to Russia shortly after the fall of communism. Over 50 of Carner’s award-winning short stories, articles, and personal essays have appeared in anthologies, literary magazines, and leading websites.

Talia Carner’s addictions include chocolate, ballet, hats—and social justice.

    ANYTHING GOES Debbie Druzy

    in Pop Culture

Bennet Pomerantz talks to media guests on the Betty Award winning ANYTHING GOES. His guest tonight is author Debra Druzy

a mom  who writes sweet ’n spicy contemporary romantic fiction in between running errands and doing household chores. With her terrible penmanship, writing a novel was never Debra’s lifelong dream. However, as a little girl she loved playing with her mother’s old typewriter, and she did pretty good in typing class in high school. When she grew up, she got a job in NYC where she did a lot of typing and spent a lot of hours commuting via the Long Island Railroad. To pass the time, she read a lot of books. All sorts of books. Syfy. Horror. Women’s Fiction.

She quickly realized Romance was her favorite—the steamier the better. All that reading gave her the big idea to write her own story, putting her overactive imagination and suspicious mind to work, playing out the possibilities of what-ifs.

So… she came home from work one day, sat in front a blank document on her computer, and attempted her first novel. It was awful but that didn’t stop her. In 2011, she joined the RWA and LIRW, where she met like-minded writers at all levels of experience. At the LIRW Annual Luncheon in May 2014, Debra pitched SLEEPING WITH SANTA to the Editor-in-Chief of The Wild Rose Press, and a few months later was offered a contract; the book released in time for Christmas 2014.

Her second story, DARE ME, a Valentine’s day novella, will be out February 1, 2016, and is available now for pre-order on Amazon and other online bookstores.

Please visit http://debradruzy.com/ to find out more about Debra and her books, sign up for her newsletter, and connect with her on social media.

    ANYTHING GOES KB Miller

    in Pop Culture

Writer/critic Bennet Pomerantz discusses subjects with authors and artists on The Betty Award winning ANYTHING GOES Tonight's guest is KB MILLER

Author, K.B. Miller is a proud native of Baltimore, Maryland. Currently, she resides in a tiny valley, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Pennsylvania along with her husband and son (both Steelers fans - eww!), her energetic puppy - Cullen Edward, and her mouthy blue front Amazon Parrot, Poppy.

K.B. is a huge football nut! That's right fellas, she's a DIE-HARD Ravens fan living in Pennsylvania! How's that for ballsy?

She's been writing for as long as she can remember, but two years ago her loving husband- who believed in her talent, finally gave her a gentle push... actually, according to her, it was really more like a kick... in the lower back-upper thigh region. She claims it hurt. After a few restless nights she decided to allow everyone to meet all of the crazy characters in her head, and here we are.

K.B. has, as her family calls it, a ridiculous addiction to hats, shoes, sunglasses, owls, and coffee. No problems there, right? That's what she said.

Welcome to K.B.-land, it's a lot like Disneyland only without all the endless lines, unnaturally happy people, and it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to enter!

    ANYTHING GOES Elizabeth Kirke

    in Entertainment

Writer/critic Bennet Pomerantz discusses subjects with authors and artists on The Betty Award winning ANYTHING GOES . His guest for the FINAL ANYTHING GOES of 2015 is Elizabeth Kirke

Elizabeth Kirke wanted to be an author before she even knew what an author was. She used to say that she wanted to be an artist, but that was only because she was too young to write and had to tell stories with pictures instead. She hasn't stopped writing since she learned how. It wasn't long before she dreamed of becoming an author and couldn't be happier now that that dream is a reality.

If she isn't writing...well, let's be honest; if she isn't writing she's probably on Facebook thinking that she should start writing. But, if she isn't writing or on Facebook, she's probably doing something involving books, baking, gardening, or yarn. In an ideal world, she'd be reading and knitting while something from the garden is in the oven. Then again, in an ideal world, she'd have a flock of ducks and a couple of goats.

Like most slightly-nosy, avid readers, Elizabeth can't resist trying to catch a peek at books she sees people reading when out in public to see if she can figure out what it is. While doing just that one day, she realized that it would probably be the coolest-thing-ever if she caught a complete stranger reading one of her books. That's her new dream.
