Mi pueblo fue destruido porque le faltó conocimiento. Por cuanto desechaste el conocimiento, yo te echaré del sacerdocio; puesto que olvidaste la ley de tu Dios, también yo me olvidaré de tus hijos.

Why the Pessimists Are Wrong (and They Are)

    in Technology

A recent Motley Fool essay by Morgan Housel raises a question we have asked many times before: Why Does Pessimism Sound So Smart? (Especially when things are so good.)

    Housel suggests several possible reasons:

    1. Optimism appears oblivious to risks, so by default pessimism looks more intelligent.

    2. Pessimism shows that not everything is moving in the right direction, which helps you rationalize the personal shortcomings we all have.

    3. Pessimism requires action, whereas optimism means staying the course.

    4. Optimism sounds like a sales pitch, while pessimism sounds like someone trying to help you.

    5. Pessimists extrapolate present trends without accounting for how reliably markets adapt.

Generally, pessimism benefits from being both more serious than optimism and way cooler.

But that doesn't mean it's the right way to look at things!

Hosts Phil Bowermaster and stephen Gordon provide numerous examples of how the pessimists get it wrong time after time, and why optimism is the most realistic and, yes, serious way to approach the world.

    ¿Por qué a mi?

    in Motivation

Author-Actor-Host Danny Gardner on creativity LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

Danny Gardner impressed audiences with his performance on the 3rd season of HBO’s Def Comedy Jam (All-Stars Vol. 12). He has enjoyed a career as an actor, director and screenwriter. He is a recent Pushcart Prize nominee for his creative non-fiction piece Forever. In an Instant., published by Literary Orphans Journal . His work has appeared in Beat to a Pulp, Out of the Gutter and Noir on the Air. His debut novel, A NEGRO AND AN OFAY. He lives in Los Angeles and originally hails from Chicago. Danny is also the one of the rotating hosts on NOIR ON THE RADIO in the Authors on the Air Global Radio Network. From Danny: " When I was first learning how things work in published fiction, I made note of behavior. I’m a multi-talent with a delivery that can easily fill the room; however, the readings I attended seemed like sober affairs and no place for a ham. An author is introduced and then reads from his or her own work, which is normally followed by a polite Q&A session. Books are signed and attendees disperse. To this old performer, it’s rather straightforward and appropriate, as it’s a lot to ask someone to take a chance on a book."

31-On The Record: Use Your Powers for Good

    in Business

Kathleen Wirt has owned and operated the legendary 4th Street Recording studio in Santa Monica, California for twenty-seven years, and has been the sole owner since 2001. Listed by The Hollywood Reporter as one of - LA's Temples of Sound - and as one of the - Top 10 US Studios Under $100 an Hour - 4th Street features vintage analog equipment and a floating tracking room encased in sand.

In the early years, Kathleen was unwilling to allow the studio to sit empty when it was not booked, so she read the trades and frequented clubs, offering spec deals to bands that seemed promising. As 4th Street's client base grew and the studio gained in reputation, people credited not only the skills of its producers and engineers, but also Kathleen's scouting and promotion.

Twenty-seven acts have been signed to record deals through 4th Street Recording, starting with Fiona Apple, whose spec deal recording of - Shadowboxer - became the first single on her Grammy-nominated multi-platinum album -Tidal. Next came Incubus, Alien Ant Farm, and Hoobastank, all to become platinum-selling artists.  The most recent is The Neighbourhood, whose 4th Street EP led to their signing to Columbia and a double-platinum radio hit, - Sweater Weather.

Kathleen is a member of NARAS, and is the Vice President of Los Angeles Women in Music. She also works to discover and nurture production careers through 4th Street Recording's internship program, which has helped launch the careers of many young producers and engineers.
