Maureen Bay - Lady Biker & Owner of Gem of an Idea

    in Radio

Many of us wear two hats in our lives. In the case of Maureen Bay, owner of Gem of an Idea in Fair Haven, the second hat is really more of a helmet. A motorcycle helmet. In 2012, approximately 27 million people in the United States operated a motorcycle, and approximately 6.7 million were women. So what do women really want? According to a study commissioned by Harley-Davidson, they might want a motorcycle. Female riders were twice as likely as their non-riding counterparts to feel confident and were twice as likely to feel extremely satisfied with their appearance. More than half of those riders said the two-wheeled experience made them feel free and independent. Maureen and her husband Bill have 5 Harleys. One is a 1967 model with an attached 1939 Goulding sidecar. Bill drives with Maureen alongside holding Scooter, an English Bull Terrier. “We do turn a few heads,” says Maureen. But women also want jewelry, and that brings me back to Maureen’s first hat, as owner of Gem of an Idea which has been around for over 30 years. She has taught jewelry making and has increased her Gemology credentials from the Gemological Institute of America. Maureen has been involved in the jewelry industry since 1972. She’s seen it all from men proposing in her store, to cutting off wedding bands after a divorce. I bet Maureen even knows the answer to this burning question: Does the second wife really get the bigger ring? After the interview, please check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for additional information.

    Metalsmith Benchtalk with Paula Crevoshay

    in Art

My Guest this Thursday, July 18th at 3 p.m. PDT on MetalSmith BenchTalk is award-winning artist and jeweler Paula Crevoshay.   About: Paula Crevoshay has attracted award-winning attention from the beginning of her career. She graduated with honors from VCU in Richmond Virginia and won a full scholarship to the University of Wisconsin where she earned her Master of Arts degree in 1977. Marrying the Fulbright Scholar, George Crevoshay, in 1978 she moved to India for three years and was given two one woman shows of her paintings and sculptures. The British Council of the Arts collected several of these works.   Having been inspired by the antiquity of Asia, She returned to America in 1981 where she launched her first collection of one-of-a-kind art jewels. Her awards and achievements took her, as a jeweler, very quickly to the fore front of modern design. Combining the disciplines of fine art, gemology and history with jewelry making transformed Crevoshay into a fresh, unique talent. In recent years she has gained renown as one of the leading designers of our time. Her work has been shown at such museums as the Smithsonian and the Carnegie, among others, as an exemplar of the very best, and it can be found in many important public and private collections.   In our age of mass production and the prevalence of the lowest common dominator, where many are seeking the next "hot" trend, it is refreshing to meet the rare talent who is consistently dedicated to the highest ideals of quality and excellence in their art. Paula Crevoshay is such a light and has been compared to Lalique and Faberge. She is among the best of our generation.   For more information on Paula, visit: http://www.crevoshay.com.

    in Art

My Guests this Thursday, March 29th at 3 p.m. PDT on MetalSmith BenchTalk are Gabriel Craig & Todd Pownell, who will discuss ethical metalsmithing.   About Gabriel: "I'm a metalsmith, writer and craft activist struggling to make things, be witty and change the world. I became aware of the ethical and environmental issues that plague jewelry making in 2005. From that time on I have become an advocate for the transparent and ethical sourcing of materials used in jewelry making. I have written about green jewelry for Metalsmith magazine and was briefly the green resources coordinator for the Society of North American Goldsmiths. I use only recycled or ethically sourced materials in my jewelry."   About Todd: Todd Pownell began his jewelry studies at the Bowman Technical school in Lancaster, PA, where he gained an in-depth exposure to all jewelry making techniques. During his training he also completed the GIA Graduate course in Gemology. Todd excelled in the craft of jewelry making and went on to a successful career in fine jewelry.   Todd is also a Member of Ethical Metalsmith's, Jewelers for social and environmental responsibility, who support ethical mining, sourcing their materials in the most responsible manner while operating their studios with "green" practices.   For more about Gabriel and Todd, visit: http://www.gabrielcraigmetalsmith.com/ and http://tapbytoddpownell.com/.

    Spell Checked with C.G. Powell

    in Books

As a teen l was selected as a member of my high school's newspaper staff, after the first article it was decided by the editor that the darkroom was a more suitable place for my skills…or lack of. Since then, I have traveled everywhere—thanks to my innate curiosity about the world and the Navy. In my life time, I have learned: aviation electronics, CCNA networking, Gemology and how to get bloodstains out of the carpet (you never know when you might need that). But my latest, all-consuming, endeavor is storytelling. When
asked why, all I could say is "I live to challenge myself; I like to be pushed outside of my comfort zone and writing is one of those things that push my boundaries. Besides it was the only way to share all of the crap bouncing around in my head!"

I live in Virginia with my husband and children. When I’m is not writing, you might find me watching hot guys jog past my front window, ordering the cabana boy to fix me another drink or abusing the local authorities…but that’s just hearsay.

Charles explains that the reason the first verses in the Gospel of John repeat almost verbatim the first verses in the book of Genesis, is that John believed that as God created the universe all around us, Christ guides us as we create the universe within us. In this fasincating look at the power of the Creative Word, Charles makes a further analogy with a description of the New Jerusalem, in the far distant future when humanity is finally emancipated from crime, greed, tyranny and oppression. The description of the city is a powerful symbol for the city which we each must build within ourselves. Drawing from astrology, numerology, gemology and kaballah, Charles weaves all of these passages together in a concluding appeal for you to build the most fabulous life you have ever imagined because, he says, your dreams ALWAYS come true.
