SORT BY Relevancy
A recent report said that two gay NFL players are refusing to come out publicly as gay because they don't want a lot of media attention for any kind of big announcement. It's an interesting revelation that both reflects and belies what we think we know about professional athletes.
On the one hand they want all the attention they can get to maximize exposure. Exposure means more of the all-mighty dollar that so many of them seek in the short span of their careers. On the flip side, we often hear that athletes don't want to be known as the "gay athlete" but just want to be known for their athletic accomplishments.
We discuss the idea of the media keeping athletes in the closet, and also the impact that big-name professional athletes can have when they come out publicly.
Plus, we have the growing attention being paid to trans issues in sports and the generosity of one young gay professional athlete named Robbie Rogers.
There are no openly gay athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball. Ditto for major college football, and in the just-concluded NCAA men's tournament, there were no openly gay players. This is not the case in high school, where in the past week Outsports has featured stories about three high school athletes -- a football player in Arizona, a basketball player in Kentucky and a wrestler in Iowa. All three came out on their own terms and it wasn't easy. But they perservered and showed that's it's possible even in high school to be a gay athlete. Which makes the contrast with the pros all that more glaring.
Many of us, athlete or not, have some sort of old injury that can flare back up with even simple movements. I heard about bolt tape and saw how amazing the reviews are! Dr. Dean is a well respected colleague of mine (check out his credentials and you'll see why) so I was excited to learn more about his all-natural invention that's all the buzz in the sports world.

Kudos to the Transgender community for finally getting the positive spotlight they deserve. Celebrities Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono and Caitlyn Jenner have truly helped kick down doors and ignite thought provoking conversations about another aspect of human sexuality. However, some of the media exposure seems a bit contrived and competitive as if networks are trying to 'one-up' the other by including a Trans topic or character in their programming.
Most recently rumors spread of the Real Housewives of Atlanta adding a Trans person to their cast. That being said, are Black gay men no longer the hot ticket on reality television. Has their season runs its course, and if so is it wise for the Trans community to try to fill that void? Will it devalue their struggle or take things to the next level.
This is going to be a very exciting conversation with special guests Tyesse Jackson and Kentay Williams.
GAY CONVERSION THERAPY – REALLY?
In case you never heard of it, some people think they can convert gays, especially young people, into heterosexuals by using a type of “therapy.” Really! Of course this assumes that being gay is like a bad habit or mental illness that can be cured. So what is this all about, does it help, does it hurt, and what are we doing about it?
Oregon is one state among several that recently passed a law prohibiting conversion therapy, and other states are considering such bans.
Samantha Ames is an attorney with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) knows about conversion, what it’s supposed to do and what it really does. She’s served as a Policy Fellow in Washington, D.C. before moving to San Francisco to work as a staff attorney focusing on conversion therapy cases. She has testified on the harms of conversion therapy and the constitutionality of efforts to end it before both state and federal bodies, as well as at the United Nations Committee Against Torture in Geneva, Switzerland.
Please join us to learn more about conversion and the hype around it.

Friday, June 26th, 2015 marks the day the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) completed what it started exactly three years to the day, June 26, 2013 when it announced a 5-4 Ruling in favor of the plaintiff Edith Windsor. On the eve of multiple Pride celebrations, in a 5-4 decision, SCOTUS ruled once again in favor of the Petitioners James Obergefell (et. al.). Result: marriage equality applies to all States of the United States of America.

At Outsports we've noticed a powerful reaction every time we post stories about young LGBT athletes. Our latest story, of two gay high school athletes at a West Virginia prom, was shared over 40k times on social media. What is it about these stories that resonates so strongly with so many readers?
Plus, Bruce Jenner had a big night last week as he came out publicly as trans in an ABC interview with Diane Sawyer. What did America learn about trans issues, and will his revelation have an impact on America's treatment of trans people?

Author, columnist, & nationally syndicated, veteran radio talk show host, Chuck Morse has interviewed numbers of newsmakers on all sides of issues. He received the 2003 Communicator of the Year award & was named a "Heavy 100" Radio Talk Host. Chuck’s not afraid to take on controversy—gay marriage included. Whereas many acknowledge repellant effects of ongoing cultural transformation, few understood how it’s happened. Starting with the 1960s, the psychological process of Hegelian dialectic virtually destroyed traditional marriage and, consequently, shattered traditional Western culture. Join us as we review the history in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling.
