"1) seeks fair (re)distribution of resources, opportunities, and responsibilities;2) challenges the roots of oppression and injustice;3) empowers everyone to exercise self-determination and realise their full potential; and 4) builds solidarity and community capacity for collaborative action.""Political leaders, or the phenomenon around them, and social causes often cannot be fully explained or understood with one or two labels. Much depends on the lenses of the onlooker impacted by the perspective from which they come".excerpt from jamaica observer columnist Grace VIRTUE.
THE campaign to posthumously exonerate Marcus Mosiah Garvey is a noble and constructive effort by his family, the Universal Negro Improvement Association, and others to exculpate him from a wrongful conviction, while mobilising public sentiment in support of his life, legacy, and the ideals for which he was falsely imprisoned. As an extension of Garvey's personal quest to repudiate this travesty of justice, we consider it our inherent right and moral obligation to hold the Government accountable for correcting this shameful act of injustice. While we concede that we best vindicate his name by demonstrating the soundness of his ideas and the infallibility of his logic, we must never forsake any opportunity to unequivocally denounce this egregious injustice and demand its judicious redress.( columnist jamaica observer Mwariama KAMAU) caribbeanradioshow.com crsradio.com call in 661-467-2407

The Black Towns Social Movement was founded primarily by former slaves and it was a successful movement, because several townships were established and several of those communities still exist today. However the Honorable Marcus Garvey who had up to 2,000,000 followers, but the Black Star Line venture never got off the ground and the membership reduced with no "business system" in place.
Today on "It's My House" we shall discuss the distinctions between the Black Towns Social Movement and Marcus Garvey, so that we can learn lessons on how we can build and protect an organization.
As We Celebrate President Obama's Historic, First Time Ever, African Summit, let us reflect on our history, Marcus Garvey, Paul Cuffe and Ron Brown with Garvey's descendant, Renaldo Ricketts, Historian and Genealogist.
Cuffe, first a whaling ship captain, eventually became a ship owner, operating a number of vessels which sailed between ports along the coast of Massachusetts. By 1811 he was reputedly the wealthiest African American in the United States and the largest employer of free African Americans. Cuffe helped to establish “The Friendly Society of Sierra Leone,” a trading organization run by African Americans who had returned to West Africa. Cuffe and others hoped the success of this enterprise would establish business enterprises, generate a mass emigration of free blacks to West Africa who, once there would work to abolish slavery.

Today on "It's My House" we shall conduct a law study session. Our topic shall be the case of United States v Marcus Garvey. Mr. Garvey at the height of his popularity had at least 2,000,000 followers. We shall take a look and see where the Black Star Line ventured into left field. We shall see if the staff of the Black Star Line was "law literate", "politically literate", and did they have a "legal defense fund".
We shall also introduce you to the concept of "dirty words" and "clean/legal words".

By 1919, Marcus Garvey and UNIA had launched the Black Star Line, a shipping company that would establish trade and commerce between Africans in America, the Caribbean, South and Central America, Canada and Africa. At the same time, Garvey started the Negros Factories Association, a series of companies that would manufacture marketable commodities in every big industrial center in the Western hemisphere and Africa.
In August 1920, UNIA claimed 4 million members and held its first International Convention at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Before a crowd of 25,000 people from all over world, Marcus Garvey spoke of having pride in African history and culture. Many found his words inspiring, but not all. Some established black leaders found his separatist philosophy ill-conceived. W.E.B. Du Bois, a prominent black leader and officer of the N.A.A.C.P. called Garvey, "the most dangerous enemy of the Negro race in America." Garvey felt Du Bois was an agent of the white elite.
