    Is Society Obsessed With Weight?

    in Health

We hear all the time about weight gain, weight loss, how Americans are the heaviest we’ve ever been, and myriad plans for remedying our egregious fatness. And yet…what if a lot of what we’re told and what we believe simply isn’t true? Award-winning writer Harriet Brown set out to explore our relentless obsession with weight and thinness—with surprising results.  In Body of Truth, Brown tackles the myths and realities of the “obesity epidemic,” exposing the biggest lies driving the rhetoric of obesity. With provocative prose and razor-sharp wit, she examines our tendency to find weight scapegoats (sugar and wheat are the current favorites), gives historical and contemporary context for what it means to be “fat” (making a strong case that it’s not a dirty word), and offers ways for all of us to think about weight and health with more nuance, accuracy, and respect. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host June Stoyer talks to Harriet Brown author of the best-selling book, Body of Truth, How Science, History, and Culture Drive Our Obsession with Weight--and What We Can Do About It. Joel Salatin's Folks,This Ain’t Normal

    in Environment

Thanks to decades of clever mass marketing campaigns, the average person has become completely disconnected with how our food is grown and also what real food should look like. With the agro-chemical companies chiming away that “there is going to be a food shortage if we don't produce more food and decrease the world population in order for everyone to survive,” the reality is most people do not have a clue as to how their food is produced, where it is grown or how it is grown. Processed foods, initially created with the intention to save time, are simply not a healthy choice. In his best-selling book, Folks, This Aint Normal: A Farmers Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World he takes us into his world as he talks about how our food is produced and why we ought to take a closer look at where and how our food is produced. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer talks to Joel Salatin about getting to know who grows your food and why, Folks,This Ain’t Normal!

Building a nation in Africa ....Creating the Mindset and education

If building a nation in Africa is important....How do you create the mindset to make that Nation a Reality?

SO. You want to start your own country. You have cast about and discovered the strange quirky world of micronationalism and you think you might be interested in having your own little realm to rule but where do you start?

Please note, what follows are some suggestions as to the workings of the micronational world. There is truly no specific definition that applies to any aspect of the micronational hobby, it is largely up to the individual micronationalist and the individual micronation.

    The Definition

First, before we get into the mechanics of this, let's have a little definition of what a micronation is:
A micronation is an entity created and maintained as if it were a nation and/or a state, and generally carrying with it some, most or all of the attributes of nationhood, and likewise generally carrying with it some of the attributes of statehood. Though a micronation may well have begun as a mere drollery, it has the potential (given the evolution of a sufficiently vital national culture) to develop into a true nation, and possibly to achieve statehood.

ELAINE MCGILLICUDDY HONORS A DYING REQUEST: "SING TO ME AND I WILL HEAR YOU"

    in Culture

ENVISION THIS:  “Though outwardly our bodies are dying, inwardly our spirits are being renewed every day.”  (Epigraph from II Corinthians in one of Elaine’s New Poems)

After the life-altering experience of the loss of Francis, her spouse, Elaine McGillicuddy knew her calling as a poet and writer had become an imperative. Amazed over Francis’ remarkable request of her when he would die, "SING TO ME AND I WILL HEAR YOU", Elaine chose his words for the primary title of all three of her books and for a CD of her reading The Poems of the first book.  The second book, "A Love Story" is a prose memoir. The third book, New Poems, marks the completion of the author’s trilogy. Reflecting over five years of the author’s experience as a widow, it tracks her progression through the crucible of the death of her spouse.

In this interview, Elaine shares with us fresh insights into what she feels called to do at this transitional time in her life. As she has done before with past birthdays, Elaine will make her upcoming 80th birthday a fund-raising event for Immigrant Asylum Seekers here in Portland, Maine. She will continue teaching Africans English as a Second Language, but beginning this fall – in a formal way, through Adult Ed. She will also be helping a former student with her work with traumatized children. Feeling called to share her story of love and what she witnessed in her late husband’s transformation as he approached his death, Elaine plans to give book readings. As an elder concerned about future generations and the environment, she will also continue their peace and justice work.

We are privileged to hear how Francis’ ministry as a married priest lives on in the heart and the ministry of Elaine, an ex-nun. Their love shines forth as a sacrament of God's love for humankind.
