    Garden Design and Construction for DIYs

    This will be the first of a multiple part series on how to approach garden design for a residential project which will benefit those homeowners who are going to do the majority of the work themselves and/or be more knowledgeable when working with a professional garden construciton company so you as the homeonwer can approach the project from a position of having an understanding of what should happen during a garden construction project. We will start with revieiwng the site and progress through design considerations, options and techniques.  We will also include how to identify a good contractor and how to source and idientfy good vendors if you are installing yoour garden yourself.  After dogin this for 40+ years we have learned through both formal education and sometime more importantly hands on trial and error.

Smith will be Washington, DC Public Schools Athletic Director, Stephanie Evans.  Evans heads a department that oversees athletics in 111 schools in grades 4 through 12; the total 2011-12 DCPS enrollment is approximately 46,000 students, according to a DCPS spokesman.


    A 1990 graduate of Potomac (Md.) High School, Evans served for the past year as director of player development for the Holy Cross basketball team and later as an assistant athletic director at the Kensington private school. A former Bowie State player, Evans was a head women’s basketball coach at UDC, Virginia State and, most recently, Kentucky State.

    This Tuesday at 11:30 am est, we will have our last of the “New York State Of Mind”  series with Female African-American Athletic  Directors located in New York,  Renee Bostic of Medgar Evers College.   Bostic's philosophy on student-athlete development  is one of a student centered mindset. The department  focuses on the holistic growth of the student-athlete and help them develop a winning attitude and pride in Medgar Evers College.
     
    Bostic says "It's an honor to join the Medgar Evers College community. I am excited and enthusiastic about the possibilities of success," when speaking about joining the Cougar family.  Bostic continues, "it's going to be a work in progress, but I am ready and eager to roll up my sleeves and get to work."
     
    Bostic is the first female Athletic Director at Medgar Evers College.  She takes over for Kevin Adams that will stay with the college as Director of Student Life & Development.  Bostic is an active member of the Women's Basketball Coaching Association, Black Coaches and Administrators Association, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority , Inc..

    Thinking About Getting Your Spring Garden Ready

    It is that time of year. Time to get the sprng garden plots ready for the coming year. Picking out what you want to grow, what you want to eat in the coming year, how much of it, where it will be planted. While it is still cold over muchh of the nation, nothing is stopping you from preparing soil, selecting seeds, and getting the stuff ready for the spring planting.

    The Garden Writers Association has a neat program called "Plant a Row for the Hungry".  Learn how the Garden Writers Association Foundation has helped folks in need, since 1995, provide needed Vegetables and Fruits to local Food Pantry and Food Bank Groups.  Carol Ledbetter will tell us what her involvement with PAR is all about and how you can join them in their Quest to get more food to folks.  These are Garden Writers that you find in your Newspaper, Radio and Television Shows.  Join them! and help "Plant a Row for the Hungry".
