Active learning is hard to leave in the classroom… if compelling, learners recount and rethink what they learned long after the lesson ends. The Maker movement embraces a “hands on, minds on” approach that links the tactile nature of learning with building and knowledge. This episode of Ed Table Talk explores the structure of the maker movement and asks the pivotal question: What is the importance of providing realistic context for students to apply their knowledge and become better learners?
The Maker movement has a long history in how we teach and students learn. The movement helps to change the perception about how best to teach students and how we prepare educators to manage a rich learning environment. Anybody who used pipe cleaners and Popsicle sticks was a member of the Maker movement, so why is it that we often forego this teaching strategy as students get older?
Research shows that kids who apply what they learn create more extensive knowledge that they can then apply in a variety of contexts outside of the classroom. This especially rings true for students who tend to be more visual learners. We will discuss ways that this strategy can be applied in your offerings and how it makes students better learners in their other academic pursuits — writing, math, science, social science, and the arts.
Join host Michael Jay and guests as they discuss the popular Maker movement and its implications for preK-12 teaching and learning.

He is currently completing his eighth year as an educator and has been at Patapsco since beginning his teaching career.
“A strong teacher-student relationship facilitates the opportunity for deeper learning and more critical thinking,” says McComb. He firmly believes that public education is the foundation for opportunity and success for any child. In addition to his role as an English instructor, McComb helped develop, and continues to spearhead, Patapsco’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program which boasted a 98% college acceptance rate for its last two graduating classes.

He also coaches the Patapsco Cross Country Team, supervises cultural exchange programs, and has led several university training sessions and presentations for future teachers. McComb says that he has found his purpose in teaching stating, “I have worked to engage my students and push them to achieve the excellence within them. Seattle, WA – The environment in which personal growth and healing occurs can be incredibly important to the process itself. An inspiring and sacred place may deepen a person’s learning experience.
Iris Milligan is the Founder of The Sacred Garden Healing Center, ‘a nurturing space to facilitate awakening through the education and practice of healing arts.’ The center offers a beautiful and serene setting for classes, meetings, therapeutic enclaves and retreats for intimate groups.
“It‘s a place for people to come and learn and grow,” says Iris. “It’s a very grounded space that’s deeply connected with nature.”
Iris began her spiritual journey with Reiki classes back in 1999. These classes would introduce her to the world of other healing arts.
“I’d taken some amazing classes and workshops and some of them had been in the most beautiful places, in the woods or on the beach,” recalls Iris. “The environment made the workshop even more powerful. Most workshops happen in hotel conference rooms, and those workshops are wonderful, but I’ve always felt there was something lacking.”
Iris moved back to Seattle, upon which she set out on her most ambitious creative endeavor to date: to create the ideal healing center for the people in her community to gather and learn and grow.
Today, Iris offers the Sacred Garden Healing Center for everything from personal growth and awareness workshops to women’s support groups and even shamanic workshops. The garden, dove sanctuary, flowers, pathways and trees provide the optimal environment for learning and growing.
“The process of creating the center has been an incredible journey for me,” says Iris. “It's helped me to learn and grow in ways I could have never imagined."
