R.I.P. Hot 97? Funkmaster Flex v. Jay Z? Classic Hip Hop on FM?

    in Hip Hop Music

NOTE: We'll be paying respect to ASAP Yams on tonight's show as well, and talking about the Jay-Z/Hot 97 purchase rumor. The following was written before all that.

    Hip hop radio.

It's a topic we've touched on before, paricularly in regards to New York's iconic Hot 97 and their lack of support for local artists, or the hip hop community at large.

Hot 97 remains at the center of the discussion, in part because of their iconic status, but also in part because of their stubborn insistence that they be considered the "voice" of hip hop, even though much of their actions point in the opposite direction, and are even hurtful to the music and culture that made them what they are.

We'll talk biting the hip hop hand that feeds them, and what might be going on at the station. A flurry of high profile and loyal departtures, new, out-of-town personnel with little to no hip hop radio experience, and a heated on-area airing out of Jay Z by once-prominent Funkmaster Flex has many of us who watch the industry perplexed.

Is Hot 97 on the verge of a complete collapse, format switch, or something else entirely unexpected? Will they ever be more than a typical 2015 rap radio station that plays a forumlaic playlist and doesn't take any responsibility for helping to negatively affect the music and culture that made many of them rich?

Perhaps they'll fall off completely and change to the radio "format of the day," classic hip hop! It's a format that many stations are rushing to change to, but our show host Manny Faces feels it's actually bad for hip hop, and likely to fail.

Feel free to call with your thoughts. Do you listen to Hot 97? What do you think is missing, if anything? Are you an old-school head? Are you excited about the classic format idea?

Tune in and participate. It's NY's hip hop talk radio, and it's all about YOU!

  • SPECIAL REPORT: Hip Hop and Race - A NY Hip Hop Report Talk Show Town Hall

    in Music

Hip hop music and culture were born due to an incredibly unique real-world atmosphere, and since its inception, has always documented real life issues, often serving as a raw, unfiltered look at urban America through the eyes of those with a perspective like few others. Once dubbed the "CNN of the streets," hip hop has suffered something of an imposed identity crisis in recent years, being forced into a formulaic box by profit-seeking media conglomerates, seemingly more eager to produce cookie cutter music and prop up a certain sub-genre of rap superstar, at the expense of the huge range that exists in the overall music and culture.

As always, New York plays a huge part of this issue, but while NYC is still the Mecca, the issues facing hip hop that deal with race, have become a national -- even international -- issue worth discussing on its own. Add to this, the current turbulent relations between many Americans and the institutions supposedly designed "to serve and protect" them, based largely on the unequal treatment served to certain segments of the population.

In this special episode of The NY Hip Hop Report, we'll discuss both of these intriguing landscapes, both individually and how they coincide. Well discuss instances of real and perceived "cultural misappropriation" in the hip hop music business, how the industry muscled out pro-Black and "conscious" hip hop music over the years, as well as how current hip hop artists and organizations are at the forefront of the new civil rights movement, yet, rarely receive recognition or assistance, even from hip hop's most powerful figures.

If there is any episode that we need your input, it's this one. We'll be taking calls all night from listeners and a couple of special call-in guests. Join us, and join the conversation!

NY Hip Hop Talk Radio Open Mic - Your calls: Any artist, any topic!

    in Music

Ah, the beginning of a new year. Another milestone moment, to look at, analyze and discuss NY rap music and hip hop culure.

Tonight, we'll begin our show imploring members of the hip hop public to stop doing the ONE THING that really does damage to the music and culture that they claim to love and support.

Then, host's Manny Faces and Steve Ortiz will have a discussion about who, what, where, when and how the New York rap scene continues to grow, thrive, innovate and excel, despite the massive amount of ignorance about it displayed by hip hop media, and sadly, much of our own community.

Here's a great chance to call in and talk to us and our audience about what YOU enjoy in New York rap scene. An artist, a group, a DJ, a producer, a venue, an organization...

We spend every week doing this, but from time to time, we want to make sure we're not missing anything.

So, if you care about NY rap music and hip hop culture, and have something to say about it one way or the other, now's your chance.
