KELLY O'CONNELL AM 1450: Dona Ana County Battle

    in Politics

Much like the larger national political struggle, there is a battle raging for the soul of Dona Ana County & related Democrat Party. Sheriff Enrique Kiki Vigil ran on a platform of cleaning up corruption. Little did Billy “Golden Earing” Garrett and Wayne “Rhode Scholar” Handcock realize that the County Commission would be straight in his bulls-eye. And yet they dismissed and failed to take seriously Kiki at their peril.

Kiki has repeatedly poked the County Commissioners in the eye over disagreements over their style. Kiki complained about lack of funding for the sheriff’s office, freedom of speech in meetings, misleading he and staff and the public over budget proposals, control of Dona Ana Correctional after jailer’s Chris Barella’s arrest, and now over suspending his staff because of complaints.

Kiki has fought back with what he claims is the only tool left in his arsenal -- the court system -- both state and federal. He first filed a Federal case claiming the County Commision and Golden Earing Garrett repressed his first amendment rights to free expression.

The tit-for-tat came to a head when Kiki arrested diminutive jailer Chris Barela over embezzlement and bringing a rifle into the jail. Kiki then took over the jail, which lasted about 3 hours. Ready to pounce on Kiki was the County manager Julia Junkyard Brown and attorney Nelson Goodin who filed a restraining order with Judge Arrietta with an attached emergency hearing. A defiant and transparently aggravated Julia Brown then delivered the coup de grace on live TV, slamming the TRO down on a live mic in front of a startled KIKI. Then she did the diva walk off shuffle.

More occured when Kiki decided to strike back again...

    The Movie?

    Walt Disney's Saving Mr. Banks.

In addition to being a wonderful movie with incredible performances by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, there are lots of great lessons for life, love and business we can learn from the film. What would a Disney movie be without that?

In a lively fun discussion and a catchy sing a long tune or two, we will explore the lessons embedded in this brilliant Disney feature.

For those of you that don't know the story or have not seen the film. Walt Disney's daughters begged him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers' Mary Poppins (1964), he made them a promise - one that he didn't realize would take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up an insanely difficult writer who is not about to let her beloved magical nanny get mauled by Hollywood. But Travers finds herself all but broke and reluctantly travels to LA to meet with Walt. For weeks in 1961, Disney pulls out all the stops, armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs. But Mrs. Travers doesn't budge. The rights begin to move look like they might slip away forever. It is only when Walt reaches into his own childhood that he discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history – Mary Poppins
