The diverse heritages of the people of New Orleans makes this city very unique, interesting and alive with traditions that are not found in any other city in the country. New Orleans is a place where Africans intermingled with Native Americans and european settlers ultimately creating a sustainable culture that distinguishes New Orleans today. Dr. MaryMiitchell, History Professor at UNO, joins us to discuss the African contributions to New Orleans and the dynamics that slavery played in the development and culture of this city.
Most people don’t equate compassion and beauty when they think of Voodoo, but Voodoo historian, Professor Martha Ward, says that is what she discovered when she first began researching the practice. Prof. Ward is a Professor Emeritus at UNO and author of the book, Voodoo Queen: The Spirited Lives of Marie Laveau, the only academic account of the famous New Orelans voodoo priestess and her daughter, Marie Laveau II. Professor Ward offers a Voodoo history lesson and her belief that Hollywood and media have incorrectly racialized and stigmatized Voodoo.
Enjoy our FQF hour one discussion of New Orleans art and history.
I’ll Have a Medium, Please… Did you think I meant French fries or a diet coke? Or did you think I just purchased a new T-shirt at a local clothing store. Media is the plural of Medium.
We get our information and entertainment from media. We learn all kinds of things about our world. Media messages inform, entertain and can even persuade us. The common thread of media messages is that they INFLUENCE us.
Young Media Critics examine the definition and share examples of "What is medium"? Join Young Media Critics on Tuesday, 5 p.m. (EST) in the U.S.
Tonight we want to delve into the Trans Atlsantic Slave Trade story that although we never herd about it while in public school it has been taught by many of our accredidated conscious BA Scholars. Why do we learn of this horrific history by only B/Academia and not W/Academia if actually happened on the scale that we have been led to believe? Why do we not learn about all these atrocities of world and American history as children in school were it was supposedly taught to us in History class? How many of we have memory of the MAAFA? However we watch some movies on slavery played by White and Black actors and now it is seared in our minds that these awful things happened because now a (movie) told us it did. They did the same thing with the movie the TEN Commandments. Which I actually own by the way. But the world knows the Biblical Hebrews were never a white people. And yet because of this movie Polish Germans (?) have been allowed to pass themselves off as Biblical Black Jews. Wow, that is majic. Ayiti/Haiti occupies small satellite islands known for tourists, including; lle-a-Vache", which includes Port Morgan and Abaka Bay. In French, the country's nickname is La Perle des Antilles (The Pearl of the Antilles), because of its natural beauty. It is the most mountainous nation in the Caribbean and the country's highest point is Pic la Selle, at 2,680 metres 8,793 ft. By area, Haiti is the third largest Caribbean nation after Cuba and the Dominican Republic with 27,750 square kilometres 10,714 sq mi (roughly the size of the U.S. state of Hawaii or the country of Belgium by population, Haiti is the second largest Caribbean nation, with an estimated 10.7 million people, just under a million of whom live in the capital city, Port-au-Prince. How long have BA's been enslaved?

Margo Rey joined us earlier this year to share her incredible music and charitable work with Brides Against Breast Cancer, as well as her own journey through the disease as a two time "cancer warrior." Margo Rey's music has captured audiences worldwide with unforgettable melodies and connection to life's greatest struggles. Her biggest hit, "Let the Rain" — co-written with the legendary John Oates — remained on the charts for 21 weeks. She then generated more than 2 million dollars with the song to benefit the non-profit Brides Against Breast Cancer (BABC).
Margo Rey began performing at just 11 years of age. A native of Mexico, she's fluent in English and Spanish, and possesses conversational skills in French and Italian. It's no wonder she's been able to deliver her alternative pop songs in eight languages! Now, Margo isn't only promoting the "I Do!" campaign for BABC, she's also teamed up with her husband Ron White on a Darelicious challenge to raise $10K!
Margo says, "education and personal support are just as critical as prompt medical treatment." She volunteered her time to be the national ambassador for "Brides Against Breast Cancer" while undergoing chemotherapy and planning her own wedding to the famous comedian and actor Ron "Tater Salad" White. Margo is also about to re-release her holiday EP, This Holiday Night just in time for the holiday season featuring the original title track, “Silent Night,” and “Toyland” and just recorded a Spanish version of “This Holiday Night.” We'll share some of Margo Rey's latest music and hear about Ron White's hilarious dare campaign in support of BABC, as well as get his take on being a caregiver.
