Public Broadband in Tennessee As a Free Market Lever

    in Internet

Tennessee, along with North Carolina, has become Ground Zero in the Obama Administration’s drive to roll back state laws restricting public-owned broadband networks. But what about on the ground? How do consumers, businesses and state legislators feel about these laws?

Tennessee State Senator Janice Bowling discusses her views on why it’s time to question the value of her state’s restrictions. Sen. Bowling believes in the free market system. But she also believes from first-hand experience that the public-owned fiber network in her hometown of Tullahoma successfully meets a vital economic need that the market can’t or won’t address.

The Senator describes her constituency’s progress in economic advancement, education, healthcare since launching their own network. Some Tennessee townsfolk can look across the bridge and see citizens in cities such as Chattanooga benefitting from gigabit networks. Sen. Bowling feels this is an injustice to communities, and last year led efforts eliminate the restriction on public utilities to expand their broadband services to nearby communities.

Derek Khanna on Real Free Market Policy

    in Self Help

Michael and Derek Khanna, Yale Information Society Project Fellow, talk about Derek’s Piece in the American Conservative called The Party of Innovation.

The article encourages the Republicans to embrace what Khanna calls “real free market policies” to foster in a new revolution in tech in the American marketplace.  Khanna advocates free markets as a path toward economic growth.  He encourages big “disruptive” innovations, like Tesla stirring up the automative industry, and Uber challenging the taxi establishment.

Khanna tells the tale of Outbox, a start-up that offered a service digital scanning and email paper mail for consumers.  Eventually, as they grew, the Post Office stepped in and quashed the start-up.

23andMe was a company that analyzed DNA for $100 and told individuals what their genome indicated.  They got a letter from the FDA saying that they were diagnosing people and needed to cut it out.

Derek saw how mobile phones were tethered to carriers as a slap in the face of the free market.  Some legal barriers arose to prevent consumers from switching handsets between carriers.  Copyright, it seems, has been used to stifle innovation, so Khanna is fighting to make sure these kinds of rules aimed at protecting content creators aren’t used to stifle innovation.

Space: The Free-Market Frontier. Interview with Edward Hudgins

    in Self Help

Michael and Edward Hudgins (of the Atlas Society) get together that about SPACE and his new book, Space: The Free-Market Frontier.  Hudgins explains government boondoggles related to space stations, space regulation, rocketry, and rocket manufacturing supply chain issues … like depending on Russian manufacturers for all sorts of equipment. He’s even done stuff with Buzz Aldrin, who walked on the moon (and memorably shouted at it with Liz Lemon).

Hudgins, who spent his childhood fascinated with Space and Astronomy, interned at Goddard Space Flight Center and got to follow the first moon landing from a major space center.  Since then, Space has been a passion for him.

Hudgins put together his book with the Cato Institute, after a conference he designed on the Free Market and Space.  Hudgins has been working on the free market in space and space travel for some time now.

He points to the deregulation of the air lines that lead to lower prices for consumers.  Despite the deregulation of many industries and sectors, the government maintained a monopoly on space.  Elon Musk, of SpaceX  has revealed a manned capsule to put humans into space.

He advocates for allowing human innovation and entrepreneurship to flourish without government regulation and restriction.  He encourages free, open-market solutions to space travel to make it more affordable and practical for everybody.

Have you had your healthy dose of reality lately?

There are always at least two sides to every story. Have you ever wondered how someone, who saw the same thing you did, walked away telling a vastly different story? Which version was correct? Which one was the REAL story? Actually, both are! It’s just a matter of perspective.

Joe takes the issues… especially the controversial issues (politics, prejudice, religion, illegal immigration)… and brings in people from different sides to share their viewpoint. This is definitely not a fluff piece. And while no one is attacked, the questions are hard-hitting.

But the conversation is always respectful and you’re sure to learn something new, even if you don’t agree!

If you’ve always wondered how the “other side” thinks, then this is the show for you!

It’s not the right side, it’s not the wrong side, but the REAL side of the issues!
