About Our Guest Paul Pickett's career with Wild Birds Unlimited (WBU) has perfectly combined his love of birds, nature, and people. He joined the WBU team as the first full-time employee in 1989 shortly after graduating with a master's degree in biology and ornithology from the University of North Dakota. He has more than two decades of experience in working with potential franchisees as they decide to join the WBU team. He also has managed all site selection and lease negotiation assistance for the brand. Paul Pickett has over 24 years of experience of 'Bringing People and Nature Together" as the VP of Franchise Development for Wild Birds Unlimited, leading the Franchise Development team to grow their franchise system to over 280 stores. Additionally, he manages all of the legal and real estate responsibilities for Wild Birds Unlimited, Inc.

Over the last eight years, Franchise Interviews weekly radio show has interviewed some amazing leaders in the world of franchising. Hala Moddelmog served as president of the Arby’s franchise system. Arby’s has approximately 3,500 units and annual system-wide sales of approximately $3 billion. Under Hala’s leadership, Arby's had 12 repeated quarters of comparable store sales increases and increased EBITDA by 80 percent from 2011 to 2012. Her team created new brand positioning, launched new product platforms and new advertising campaigns and redesigned the logo.
In 2006, she was chosen as president and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s biggest grassroots organization working to eliminate breast cancer through teaching, knowledge, public policy and science throughout the globe. While she was president, Komen received its first-ever 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator, there was an increase the number of corporate sponsors and she led international mission delegations to Africa, Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Moddelmog was the first woman to lead an international restaurant company when in 1995 she was named president of Church's Chicken, the world’s third largest chicken brand with 1,500+ restaurants in 15 countries and nearly $1 billion in system sales. During her tenure, Church’s Chicken experienced eight years of consecutive comparable sales increases, which outpaced the food service industry growth rate.
In this week's installment of the Franchise Focus podcast, co-host Graham Chapman sits down with Michael Layman, the Senior Manager with Littler’s Workplace Policy Institute (WPI).
