Black Love &Relationships: Adoption, Foster Care and the Black Family

    in Culture

Generation after generation, our Black families have suffered through slavery, poverty, and drug addictions.

With that being said, there have been instances where Black children have been placed in the system under the umbrella of foster care and then sometimes adoption. What is the system like that has been taken from their family? Does it matter that their are cultural differences between what white people think and what Black people think is different such as the way you discipline your child? What is a CASA or Guardian Ad litem?

We will discuss this matter and discuss how we can be more involved in caring for our own.

Extended Foster Care - Vicki Richardson

    in Lifestyle

"Permanency needs to be based on youth's decision.  We need to make adult adoption easier to achieve and the state needs to pay for them.  We need to do a better job for our youth from 18 to 21, regardless of if they are in extended foster care or not.  Another interesting practice is the foster/adoptive parents opening dialogue with birthparents, and young adults receiving more support as they navigate through the process of reconnecting with their birthparents."  - Vicki Richardson
