Whiplash, Out of the Dark and More Film Poems

    in Movies

Film critic Betty Jo Tucker reviews Whiplash, Boyhood, Out of the Dark and other films that motivated her to write poems about them. The first two movies recently received Best Picture Oscar nominations, and the third is a suspenseful horror release which opened February 27. Time permitting, the following movies will also be covered during this episode: Amercan Sniper, Big Eyes, Jessabelle, White Bird in a Blizzard, The Zero Theorem, Beneath, 3 Holes and a Smoking Gun, and Gosford Park.

I’m trying to be more creative with my reviews, Betty Jo explains. Surprisingly, my film poems are resulting in more feedback, which makes me very happy.

Producer Nikki Starr joins Betty Jo as co-host for this unusual show. Listeners can expect to enjoy Nikki’s lively, candid, and perceptive reactions to the film poems presented.

Beyond the Airwaves Episode #149 -- Power Rangers Dark Film and Copyright Issues

    in Entertainment

This is Beyond the Airwaves: The Infinity Project, where we go beyond the mainstream media and tackle issues that don't seem so important to the major networks.

In the course of the past week, many people have seen a YouTube video for Power Rangers fan-made film with James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff. The 15-minute movie is filled with vulgar language, gore, and incredible violence. Saban Capital Group managed to get it down because of copyright infringement. Less than 24 hours after it was pulled, though, the video's creator changed some wording and got it back up. We'll discuss the issues of copyright laws and infringement not only for this film but also other videos pulled because of these copyright laws. The entire hour will be devoted to the copyright debate.

Silly, Messy Humans: ¨Slut: A Documentary Film¨ by Emily Lindin

    in Current Events

Imagine you’re eleven years old and labelled the school ¨slut.¨ Where would you turn? What would you do? Emily Lindin turned to her diary, chronicling each and every damaging event. More than a decade later Emily published these entries online and founded The Unslut Project. Devastated by the suicides of Rehtaeh Parsons, Amanda Todd, and Audrie Pott, Emily sought to provide some perspective to girls – more than a decade after her experiences - who currently feel trapped and ashamed.

And now, Emily is producing ¨Slut: A Documentary Film.¨ This film will tell the stories of girls who took their own lives because of sexual bullying, and feature the opinions of respected sexologists, psychologists, and media figures to explore how we can all work toward a world where the word "slut" doesn't even make sense as an insult.

Join us on this special broadcast date to learn more about Emily, her film, and how you can help bring its much needed messages to communities everywhere.

Team Race 4 marathon runners fundraising for Kenya

    in Business

Guests: Anna Rodrigues, Delis Alejandro and Nataly Garcia

On March 14 and 15, 2015, St. Monica Parishioners (Santa Monica, CA) will participate in the 5K walk and run of the LA Marathon raising funds for Veronika’s Place.

Veronika’s Place is a nutritional support program, in Dandora, Kenya. That
provides food each month for 400 men, women, and children with HIV/AIDS.

Team Race 4 Veronika's Place is in its 3rd year as an official charity
partnering with the ASICS LA Marathon. Over the past 2 years we have had 55
team members and raised money to provide food to Veronika's Place for two
    years.

Many of those who receive this food are single mothers and their children.
The monthly food distribution through the Veronika’s Place ministry
provides them with basic nutrition, including cooking oil, flour and rice.
It is extremely important for patients to maintain weight for medication to
    be effective.

Veronika Lineberry Manzella, a member of the Holy Cross Africa Ministry
Core Team at St. Monica's Church, was determined to make a difference when
she saw a video about the struggles, despair and plight of the people of
Dandora, Kenya. She set out to raise funds for the Brother Andre Dispensary
and the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Clinic in Africa. In 2007,
following Veronika’s untimely passing, the people of Dandora dedicated the
VCT Clinic in her honor and renamed it “Veronika’s Place.”

Ourgoal for our 3rd year is to raise approximately $30,000

dollars per year to maintain the food distribution at its current level.

If you would like to support the runners representing Veronika’s Place

Since Monsters Underground aired Brock has not slowed down. He put together Team Rogue in Maine to continue the search. Recently Team Rogue investigated the Turner Bigfoot Sighting. This sighting is very interesting as it seems too good to be true. But is it? The team is still getting sightings in Turner, Maine. All this confirms something seems to be in the woods of Turner, Maine. Team Rogue spends more time in the field than any other research group. The team just returned from a 10 day road trip researching cryptids in the Ohio Valley. Brock has contributed Possible Sasquatch tracks found in the Chain Of Ponds area in Maine to the Cryptozoology museum in Portland Maine. The tracks can be seen at the Museum.
