The Longest Romance: The Mainstream Media and Fidel Castro

    in Politics Conservative

Humberto Fontova was born in Havana, Cuba. He and his family of 5 attempted to leave in 1961, but only 4 of them were successful. Humberto Fontova Sr. (author's father) was grabbed by the milicianos. He yelled to Esther (mother) and the 3 kids (Humberto age 7, Patricia age 8, and Enrique age 5) to "Go ahead!....Whatever happens to me, I don't want ya'll growing up here!" The next day, from a cousin's house in Miami, Esther called Cuba and found out that Humberto Sr. was in La Cabana, firing squad central where 2100 men and boys were murdered. Humberto Sr. stayed there for 3 months and then was released and returned to his family in New Orleans.

History records few propaganda campaigns as phenomenally successful or enduring as Castro and Che’s. The Longest Romance exposes the full scope of this deception; it documents the complicity of major U.S. media players in spreading Castro’s propaganda and in coloring the world’s view of his totalitarian regime. Castro’s cachet as a celebrity icon of anti-Americanism has always overshadowed his record as a warmonger, racist, sexist, Stalinist, and godfather of modern terrorism. The Longest Romance uncovers this shameful history and names its major accomplices.

Some thoughts about Gabriel Garcia-Marquez & Fidel Castro

    in Politics

Victor Triay, author and college professor, joins me for a chat about the Latin American left.   We will also hear from Michael Prada.

We will look at the death of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, the well known author of the Spanish language, who died in Mexico City.

My concern is that Mr Garcia-Marquez is another one of those Latin American intellectuals who loved Fidel Castro more than the Cuban people.  How else do you explain his fascination with Castro?  Why the selective indignation?

"CUBA, ADIOS" BY LORENZO PABLO MARTINEZ

    in Books

Between 1960 and 1962 more than 14,000 Cuban children escaped Fidel Castro’s communist regime as part of an airlift known as Operación Pedro Pan. LORENZO PABLO MARTÍNEZ was one of these children. In CUBA, ADIÓS: A Young Man's Journey to Freedom, Martínez vividly recounts his participation in a program that bridged two different cultures and achieved great political significance over the years. At eighteen, he forfeits a music scholarship to Prague to accept an unknown future of exile in America without knowing the language, money to pursue an education, or family to help. Plagued by guilt around his sexual identity and having to care for a younger brother, Martínez forges ahead to become the composer of his future; later he opens the doors that enable his sisters and parents to join him after a harrowing sojourn in Mexico City. With the same determination, he attends college and pursues a music education, obtaining a master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music, then a doctorate from Columbia University. Even after his music compositions are published and performed on television and at international festivals, Martínez feels restless and spiritually unfulfilled. Until, that is, he is able to define the true music of his freedom. CUBA, ADIÓS is a poignant, thoughtful account of one boy’s survival and self-acceptance, written with unflinching honesty and a wry humor.

Our Lady Of Charity & Una Dictadura con Rascacielos

    in History

Happy Memorial Day Weekend as well as Cuban Indepence day this week May 20th from Conversa Cuba Companioni- trilingual talk radio: topics are Our Lady of Charity. A wonderful article by Maria Ruiz de Lourdes Scaperlanda via the Knights of Columbus www.kofc.0rg from Sept 2007.

Of this article my dearlydeparted cousin and eternal co host of this show John O' Donnell Rosales wrote me on the margins "Bobby, this article permitted me to go to the Knights meeting and talk of La Virgen and the terrors of Castro. There wasn't a dry eye in the house after I finished speaking, it was great and now 120 men (todos americanos) have a real view of the horrors of Castro. It was great."

And in Spanish an article by Carlos Alberto Montaner "A Dictatorship with Skyscrapers" with analysis about the recent reunion between Cuban Tyrant Raul Castro and Pope Francis in Rome.

Tambien - en Espanol - Una Dictadura con Rascaciolos un articulo por Carlos Alberto Montaner con analisis sobre la reciente reunion del Tirano Cubano Raul Castro con el Papa Francis en Roma. Via el blog de Montaner
