in Pop Culture
Part of the myth in comic book culture is that female superheroes should play second fiddle to their male counterparts. You hear more about Spiderman than you do about Spider Woman or you may have noticed the lack of toys depicting the female characters from the popular marvel movies. Considering for many years the comic book industry was a heavily male dominated field and the more iconic characters were all males created by males. Looking at the historical portrayal of women as the weaker sex in many comics they were the damsel in distress or the inquisitive sidekick in some cases that always needed saving. Fast forward to today we now have a problem. As young women are more and more involved in comic books not just reading and enjoying them in today’s pop culture they are a growing force in what is predominantly a male industry. Artists, writers, inkers, and colorist positions are now being occupied by talented individuals who are female.

This week, we go south of the border to sunny South America!
A true pioneer in outsider cinema, Jose Mojica Marins fought both poverty and governmental censure to create and release his homegrown cinema of philosophical and literal transgression, using throwaway celluloid short ends and scratching "special effects" directly on the emulsion to bring his uniquely Nietzchean anticlerical Xe do Caixao (better known on these shores as Coffin Joe) and faux-messianic madman Finis Hominis to an outraged (but fascinated) citizenry!
Allegedly (re)discovered by and granted his English language moniker by none other than Something Weird impresario Mike Vraney, their VHS reissues of these forgotten early 60's-mid 70's pieces of art maudit brought what had been an exclusively South American boogeyman (complete with a series of horror comics hosted by and featuring him) to a somewhat controversial international attention!
We'll also be moving further south to chat about free spirited zaftig Argentinian hot tamale Isabel Sarli and her enabler Armando Bo (Fuego), and the quirky sex-horror of Emilio Vieyra (Feast of Flesh/The Deadly Organ, Blood of the Virgins, Curious Dr. Humpp)!
It's a party down South of the Border, only here on Weird Scenes Inside the Goldmine!

Texas-bred musical powerhouse, KRISTYN HARRIS, is noted for her shimmering vocals, solid swing rhythm guitar style, unique songwriting, award winning yodel, and captivating stage presence. At 21 years, she is a 2-time recipient of the Western Music Association Female Performer of the Year, (2014, 2015) and is the youngest in history to receive this award. She was also named 2013 Academy of Western Artists Female Vocalist of the Year. Her singing has been praised as "timeless" with "the warmth and power of Texas sunshine".
Kristyn, though not raised in a musical household, began playing and singing at age 14 when she felt strongly inspired to pick up a guitar - and it has rarely left her hands since. Finding an instant (and enduring) passion, she launched into a headlong pursuit of music, especially attracted to the swing chordsmanship, alluring melodies, ranching themes and vintage arrangements that cornerstone western swing and cowboy music (later, throwing in bits of country, 1940s big band, gypsy jazz, and traditional folk song influences to her music, and building a gospel repertoire). Somewhere along the way it became her career path.
