    The C.O.W.S. w/ Fela Kuti

    in Education

In 1975, Fela de-anglicized the family name...

With his song 'Why Blackman Dey Suffer' Fela declared his political manifesto based on the ideology of Blackism and Nkrumahism. He called for black people to shed their [White Supremacist] mentalities, adopt our own authentic culture, STOP COPYING WHITE PEOPLE and to come together as one continent under one government. He continued to fire at [White Supremacist] complexes: 'Mr Follow Follow', 'Yellow Fever', 'Johny Just Drop' and 'Opposite People'. He exhorts African values in 'Buy Africa' and 'Africa Centre of the World'.

Majemite Jaboro visits The Context of White Supremacy. We'll discuss his book, The Ikoyi Prison Narratives: The Spiritualism and Political Philosophy of Fela Kuti. As we explore the life and art of Fela Kuti, keep in mind that it was recently reported that Beyoncé's inspiration for dawning blackface was Fela.

Thinking Aloud with Ayo in conversation with Dele Sosimi

    in Lifestyle

Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to Nigeria at the age of four, #Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s shadow at the height of early 70s afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at a somewhat tender age, he was still a young man when he shared Fela’s Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became Musical Director for both Fela’s Egypt 80 and Femi Kuti’s Positive Force.

He has gone on to establish himself as an authentic afrobeat ambassador, travelling the world and taking the afrobeat movement with him.

We’ll be talking about his music, his past and present influences/collaborations, his view on the surge in popularity of “afrobeats”, his current and upcoming projects... plus anything else that takes MY fancy ;)

I’m honoured to have such a key shaper of the Afrobeat movement, someone who was THERE when it all started, as a guest on the show!

Wanda's Picks Radio Show: Berkeley World Music Festival

    in Art

This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!

    1. Gianna Ranuzzi, Director, Berkeley World Music Festival, www.berkeleyworldmusic.org with BWMF featured artist, Nigerian guitar master and singer Adesoji “Soji” Odukogbe attracted acclaim originally as the lead guitarist for the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s groundbreaking Afrobeat band. Odukogbe draws on an extensive background in Nigerian Afrobeat, highlife, and spiritual music, bringing a unique sensibility to his highlife guitar interpretations. He is a founding member of The Afrobeat ConneXion and The Nigerian Brothers, as well as being a side man for various acts, such as “The West African Highlife Band and Kotoja. He has recorded and played with Femi Kuti, Babatunde Olatunji and Orlando Julius Ekemode, among others. Soji is now stepping into the spotlight to lead his own Afrobeat Band, featuring guitars, drums, smoking horn section and intricate vocal harmonies evident in his successful solo project, In the Flow.

    2. The BWMF ends at Ashkenaz Friday evening, June 12, with a fabulous afterparty with Thomas Mapfumo, Lion of Zimbabwe, truly a man of the people. Mapfumo is bringing a new CD, Danger Zone and a new book about his revolutionary life by Banning Eyre, Lion Songs: Thomas Mapfumo and the Music That Made Zimbabwe. http://www.thomas-mapfumo.com/
