Social Justice : Healthcare Disparities and “Obamacare”

    in Current Events

There was so much controversy about passing  “Obama-care”, officially known as The Affordable Care Act, but after all the dust has settled, there is no improvement in the health disparities between people of color in America and white Americans. Healthcare policies were written by those who were ill-equipped to address the issues that poor un-insured people face. Disparities occur in the quality of care received  (Care by Provider) even when income, health insurance and access to care are taken into account. Patients from racial and ethnic minorities often fare far worse than their white counterparts on a range of health indicators: life expectancy, infant mortality, prevalence of chronic diseases and insurance coverage, among others. We also know our health is influenced by more than what happens in a health care setting. Our health is influenced by the conditions in which we live, where we work, where our children play (Care Needed due to Circumstances). Those social determinants of health play a significant role in contributing to health disparities.

A year ago I attend a Pri-Med  conference in New York City which is a primary care (internal medicine) conference. There were all of the Northeast medical institutions represented with professors paid to teach the latest and greatest American Medical Association decision about  “ standard of care” in the land. There were holographic presentations from prestigious university medical school. The case study was of a 62 year old black American woman with diabetes, obesity, hypertension and early signs of cardiac and renal pathology. The panel's general attitude was that the patient “did not want to change her health status”.

Spartan Life Radio - Black History Month Highlights

    in Education

On the last episode of Spartan Life Radio, we talked about the stupendous Black History Month (BMH) 2016 observance taking place at Norfolk State University. In this episode, we tracked down several faculty members who have created unique and interesting programming for this year's observance. Did you know that there's a connection between the famous Buffalo Soldiers of Virginia's history and the Philippines? We're going to talk to NSU's Dr. April T. Manalang, assistant professor in the Department of History and Interdisciplinary Studies, about her research into this "hidden" Virginia History and the program she's created for the Black History Month Celebration. Professor Anthony Stockard, director of the NSU Theatre Company, will discuss the encore performance of the award-winning play "The Brothers Size." The drama has won several awards and was recently presented at the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival. "The Brothers Size" was also presented at last year's National Black Theatre Festival making it the most-awarded production in Norfolk State University history! And, last but certainly not least, Professor Carol Pretlow, NSU's resident political guru, who will round out our panel will discuss a BHM program involving students from the political science department. African American Perspectives on International Politics and Foreign Policy is a panel discussion on the topic from the student perspective.

Join us for what promises to be a spirited conversation.

Learning Life Lessons About Relationships With Your Pet (EXPERT)

    in Pets

Learning Life Lessons With Your Pet  © Judy Helm Wright wwww.AnimalHumanConnection.com

Our family used to think we needed to focus on teaching and training our pets. Actually, it was the other way around.  While we were concerned that they know about  “sit” “shake hands” and “fetch” they already knew all the important stuff in life like loyalty, kindness and love. We were blessed with the animal wisdom they shared with us

This week we will focus on relationships:

    Protect your loved ones
Be loyal to your pack members
After a conflict, shake it off and let it go
Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don’t say it in a mean way
Sometimes the best idea when it gets stressful is to close your eyes and ignore it
Love unconditionally without expecting anything in return
Don’t keep score of who does what for whom. You make the first move
Be open to being loved & accepted. Why wouldn’t someone like you?
Enjoy compliments and pats on the back
Greet your family with the same excitement I greet you.
Watch for non-verbal cues to gauge the character of visitors
If someone is mean to animals, they are not worth associating with
Understand the true value of a good friend. Friendship is the basis for all relationships
When someone is having a bad day, just sit close by quietly and listen
Be kind to those who may never have a treat for you
Never, ever lie or be unfaithful to those who love and trust you
