Open Talk: A Conversation with Detroit Leaders REBRODCAST

    in Lifestyle

Don Weatherspoon was a walk on football player who wanted to join the Michigan State Spartans in a year when they were destined for greatness.  Here's the kicker...he made the team as a defensive tackle...and they went on to win the NCAA National Championship.  That was grit and determination.   Well, flash forward about 50 years and you'll find Don Weatherspoon having earned a doctorate and compiled a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, education and in senior positions in state government; and landed in a role as a member of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. Don was asked if he would have any interest in serving as emergency manager of a deeply troubled public school system...he says yes. Soon thereafter, Governor Snyder appoints him emergency manager of the Muskegon Heights Public Schools.   Kamilia Landrum is a current member of the National Board of Directors for the NAACP.  She joined the Board in February of 2012 and became Vice Chair of the National Youth Work Committee, a member of the Finance and Audit Committees respectively, and was most recently appointed as Vice Chair of the Image Awards Committee. Locally, she is Co-Advisor to the Detroit NAACP Youth Council and Chair of the Detroit Branch NAACP Young Adult Committee. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Florida A&M University.  She served as Chair of the Fight for Freedom Fund Banquet for the FAMU Chapter of the NAACP, and Treasurer of the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  She is also pursuing her Masters of Public Administration at Wayne State.

The Racial Divide: With “Southern Rites” Filmmaker, Gillian Laub

    in Culture

Gillian Laub is a photographer/artist/filmmaker of the critically acclaimed HBO documentary, “Southern Rites”.  Gillian Laub first visited Mt. Vernon, Georgia, in 2002 to photograph the community’s segregated homecoming celebrations. Seven years later, after multiple visits to the area, the New York Times Magazine ran a photo essay, “A Prom Divided,” that documented Georgia’s Montgomery County High School’s racially segregated prom. Not surprisingly, the series generated national outrage that lead to the integration of the proms.

As the film unraveled, there became more to the intended story of this small town in Georgia…

A 22 year old black man, Justin Patterson, was shot and killed by Norman Neesmith, a white man who was living nearby in Toombs County.

With continued tensions of racial divide, this tragedy changed the course of Gillian’s documentary.

On this episode, we’re going to sit down with Gillian Laub to discuss her amazing film, “Southern Rites” and what she sees as a future for this country when it comes to the Racial Divides that affect us nationwide, and not just in the south.
