Slim Down A Double Chin With Kybella

    in Health

The ever increasing pace of aesthetic medical innovation recently saw another exciting new product added to the clinical 'toolkit'. Reducing a double-chin, or fat under the jawline, without surgery or liposuction has been difficult until now. Last week the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved a new injection therapy called Kybella (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, Inc.) which was approved for the reduction of moderate to severe fat deposits under the chin.  The active ingredient in Kybella, deoxycholic acid, dissolves fat, allowing dermatologists and aesthetic surgeons to resculpt the chin area without surgery. Dr. Heidi Waldorf, an internationally respected expert in the field of noninvasive skin rejuvenation and dermatology, including the use of soft tissue augmentation, botulinum toxins, topical cosmeceuticals, lasers, and other devices, was a lead clinical investigator on Kybella leading to its approval. Dr. Waldorf is also Director of Laser and Cosmetic Dermatology at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Associate Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine of Mount Sinai University and sees patients in Nanuet, New York, at Waldorf Dermatology & Laser Associates, and at Mount Sinai Hospital. Being involved as a lead clinical investigator with new products that may enable better patient results, and possibly even change and influence how certain procedures are performed, is an exciting part of any doctor's career. Listen to the Aesthetic Insider radio for a special glimpse into how Dr. Waldorf combines running a successful practice with important clinical investigation. To learn more call 845-623-7077 or 212-241-0472.

Vincent "The Chin" Gigante was once a big Bobby Gonzalez fan

    in Basketball

On SheridanHoops.com, coach Bobby Gonzalez tells a great New York story.

Years ago, he was having dinner in the famous Italian restaurant on the Upper East Side, Campagnola's, out celebrating his second NCAA run as the coach of the Manhattan Jaspers. The maitre d came over said some gentlemen at a nearby table would like to send over a bottle of wine, and would like to meet and thank you.

So I naively looked at the table full of recognizable characters with pinkie rings and said "Thank me for what?"

One guy looked familiar to me, and it was because his picture was often on TV and in the papers as a don of the Genovese crime family who was known to walk around Greenwich Village in a bathrobe to make the authorities believe he was crazy. He was Vincent "The Chin" Gigante.

He motioned me over, saying he and his crew wanted to meet and thank me as they had won a lot of money on Manhattan beating Florida in the tourney.

After I told him I don't gamble or know much about it, he explained we started as an 11-point underdog by the time the game started people liked my team's chances so much it dropped to 5. After we went on to win by 15, they were all very happy.

I then told him I didn't want to accept the wine as I also don't drink, but I thanked him very respectfully. Gigante and his dinner companions all said they would be following and rooting for me as their favorite coach.

I laughed and thought to myself "Only in New York."

And with that intro, here is my latest NCAA Tournament interview from Sports X Radio with Ken Thompson, a show based out of Vegas.

"Another Fork in the Road" Daniel Mollino, Survivor Cycles Coast to Coast

    in Education

Daniel was just doing his job high atop a telephone pole where he was repairing lines for a cable company. He fell about 20 feet and suffered a traumatic brain injury making him permanently disabled. Daniel battles with fatigue, memory, balance, and pain daily, but, he says that what he misses the most is his memory. Now, Daniel is making new memories. On March 30th, Daniel will cycle from New Jersey to San Francisco, a trip that he expects to complete by the end of June. Daniel hopes to raise awareness for TBI along the way. His ride is called, "TBI To Victory."

Every TBI survivor and caregiver has encountered a fork in the road that has diverted his or her life-plan. A car accident, a fall from the roof, doing one more chin-up, an IED blast, or a door literally slamming one in the face are just some causes of traumatic brain injury. College, walking down the aisle in the perfect dress, or the coveted job quickly slips from reality as dreams turn to struggle. These unexpected life-happenings that divert one from his or her chosen path in life can be devastating.

But as Yogi Berra once said, “If you come to a fork in the road, take it.” Life is all about choices!

Another Fork in the Road: Lisa Dryer

    in Education

    Meet Lisa Dryer.

It took Lisa Dryer nearly three decades to put a label on what she knew was wrong all her life. As a child, Lisa, endured learning difficulties and experienced many seizures. She didn't realize then that they were probably caused by the cardiac arrest and the lack of oxygen to her brain as a premature infant in the Neonatal Care Unit.

When recently Lisa had a computerized tomography (CT) scan that showed an abnormal brain, she laughed and said, “I know that already! Tell me something I don’t know!”

Lisa approaches her life with these thoughts. “Find the beautiful around you and stay calm.”
