Yes, I focused on things that she could do, but I also mixed them up with all the things that she couldn't do at that moment and all the things she wouldn't be able to do in the future such as having friends, dating and going to the prom, graduating and going to college."
Join us as Shandra shares parts of her journey, and principles of successfully parenting a child with "differ-abilities" in the areas of social skills, family integration, and education.

The Capicu Show is redefining the culture of community.
This week , George Torres will be talking to...
Evelyn Alvarez - Prom King
Evelyn was inspired to create a non-profit organization by the name of Prom King, due to the lack of attention to the needs of young males in the boroughs of New York. Prom King collects new and gently used clothing to outfit young men with dress attire for a variety of occasions including their prom, important engagements and other special occasions.
Juan PapoSwiggity Santiago - Capicu School of Poetic Arts
Papo, along with his co-founding committee, Jani Rose & Kieth Roach wanted to empower all of the artists across the city by offering workshops that were the level of a BFA or MFA Creative Writing workshop, but for a fraction of the cost to be accessible to the whole community. In early 2014, La SoPA or School of Poetics was incubated at the Bushwick campus of Boricua College.
Our discussion will revolve around they built community around their ideas and gained enough momentum to make a difference in their community and eventually winning a Positive Impact Award.
When Miss Evelyn, The Cat Whisperer first was first a guest on our show, one of the topics she alluded to was about a mysterious black cat that appeared in her bed when she was a child. The cat-like woman my grandmother saw long ago. The giant bird creature of my childhood. Which are real? Which are not? And what about ghost animals? What is your creepy animal story? Join hosts J and D for this second episode of Pet Spook-tacular month. You won't want to miss it--Saturday, October 11th at 5pm Central.
Danné Montague-King has lived a life that has all the elements of a feature film. A celebrity hairdresser in Newport Beach in the 1960’s Danné shopped with Jane Russell, and styled wigs for Diana Ross. He was living a charmed life, when one day Maybelline heiress, Evelyn F. Williams walked into his shop and set him firmly on a journey that shaped the rest of his life.
Danné was living as Evelyn's companion and confidante when she mysteriously died in a fire, and unjust rumors about Danné were rampant along with stories of orgies, twisted sex, drugs and Mafia connections. The Maybelline Prince (Bettie Youngs Books, 2014) is Danné’s riveting account of the life and death of Evelyn Williams and proves that not only is truth stranger than fiction but it's more intriguing as well.
The Maybelline Prince is a story culled from the headlines but is also a story of grit and determination and a will to succeed against all odds. The book reads like a novel, but has the heart of a memoir depicting a life well lived.
A portion of the sale of this book will be donated to the Harvey Milk Foundation.

Evelyn "Champagne" King is an R&B/Dance Classics legend. She released her debut album, Smooth Talk, in 1977. It included the song, "Shame" which hit the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also #7 on the R&B charts, #8 on the dance chart. Eventually, it went gold! She had other mega hits on that album such as "I Don't Know If It's Right" and who could forget "Shame"?
In 1982, she hit the charts again with "Love Come Down" which peaked at #1 on the dance charts and then "Betcha She Don't Love You" which peaked at #2 on the R&B charts. Amazingly talented and gifted, she continues to perform and rock the house where ever she goes. In 2004, "Shame" was one of the first records to be inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame!
We proudly and excitedly welcome her to Brunch In The Basement With JaVonne

Annette travels full time with her husband Paul. Together they have became an unstoppable force. Annette was 7 years old when she caught her hand in between a roller and iron plate on a hot
Ironright clothes ironer with 200 lbs pressure on her little hand. All of the tendons in her left hand were completely destroyed. The family doctor told her parents, "She will never use that hand again." Annette's parents, H. T. and Evelyn Troup, were devastated by the news. Annette laid her head on her mother's lap as she cried out to God to save the hand of her little girl. God heard Evelyn's prayer and healed Annette's hand completely.
Annette plays the piano today to bring glory to the Great Physician, the one who heals us in our time of greatest need. You will enjoy the piano stylings of one of gospel music's best as she plays "Bless the Lord". Let her new recording bring healing to your life, hands and heart.
