We open with cast from Multi-Ethnic Theatre's production of August Wilson's Jitney, running through August 31 at the Gough Street Playhouse, 1620 Gough Street (near Bush), in San Francisco. From www.wehavemet.org: "Some of the most talented Bay Area actors are people with day jobs who work in theater for sheer passion and true meaning. Jitney, set in the 'early fall of 1977,' in the Hill District in Pitsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a play about working class men, who provide 'transportation service' to their communities. Then and now, city cabs did not venture into certain communities. This play allows MET actors to bring their real life experience to the stage. The cast is a close knit group passionately dedicated to stories about an important public service: gypsy cab rides to and from African American communities." Joining us are: BENNIE LEWIS as Becker, a well respected man who runs the Jitney Station; VERNON MEDEARIS as Turnbo, a jitney driver who is always interested in the business of others; CHARLES JOHNSON as Doub, a longtime jitney driver and Korean war veteran; CHARLES JOHNSON as Doub, a longtime jitney driver and Korean war veteran; TREVOR LAWRENCE as Fielding, a jitney driver and former tailor with a dependency on alcohol; STUART ELWYN HALL as Shealy, a numbers taker who often uses the jitney station as his base; ANTHONY PRIDE, as Philmore, a hotel doorman and recurring jitney passenger; DAVID STEWART, Becker's son, recently released from prison.
We close with a show from the archives (4/3/14) which features Joanna Haigood and cast members, Antoine Hunter and Travis Santell Rowland, speaking about Haigood's piece Dying While Black and Brown.
Why is it that the term "Natural Hair" alone brings so much emotion to the forefront of a community?
Why should we even have the term "Natural Hair" which in actuality reveals that most sport as unnatural hair.
But if one were to mention this to an individual who dyes their locks, straightens them, heats them up and then douses them with all types of substances as though their hair was in a burn unit, you might get a few unkind words thrown your way.
So most of us understand this common argument that brews under the surface of the Black hair industry.
But in many recent findings we have discovered that even within the natural hair movement their is a separation somewhat of what many feel are the ideals that personify and represent it.
Well let me get straight to the point.
There is a great divide within the natural hair movement that is beyond disgusting and baffles the mind over and above any measure.
The problem that seems to be ever growing and brewing as we speak is that many women in the Natural Hair Movement seem to want to through shade at anyone who is also in the movement who has hair that is curly and not kinky.
Is this immature or what?
Here we expect to see a special breed of enlightened woman, who has embraced her natural beauty and has broken the shackles that society has placed on many to turn around and feel so negatively toward another who is supposed to be on the same team!
.......and JUST when I thought many of our Sisters were making progress this type of backward thinking rears its ugly head.
Is this the reason that it seems that only Black women call their trip to the hair salon "The Beauty Salon?" Why is it that I don't hear other races refer to it in this manner? Does this indicate that many Black women do not feel as tough their natural state is anything BUT beautiful?

How much of our time is spent fighting over our political differences? How much of our time is spent focusing on ideology? How many of the policies presented by our SELECTED representatives reflect any differences what so ever?
Join us as we break down the barriers and expose the truth behind the brutal world of politics. Is this truly a two party system? Or have they melded into one?

In the World, power is a concept with two very different meanings--'power to' and 'power over.' . ‘Power to’ refers to the ability of a person to change the circumstances of her life by creating and exercising options. 'Power over' refers to the ability to limit the options of others.
Insecurity tends to make some people try to control situations and outcomes. Surely this imposes some inconvenience or friction on other people.
A strong interest in achieving power and control in a relationship, ironically, can produce in a primary aggressor, the ‘feeling’ of being controlled. This is because the disquieting effects of a partner’s independent actions trigger coercive responses that are in the primary aggressor’s repertoire but not in their self image.
Love includes an interest in the empowerment of the partner. Power over and love are incompatible. Love leaves room for influence and leadership, but influence can’t be forced. Leadership is based on attraction not compulsion. When an interest in power over and control is held by either partner, escalation and abuse are inevitable.
Over the years I have written extensively about the New Public Management or NPM mindset that first began to influence if not dominate public sector procurement practice beginning in the late 90s.
For those unfamiliar with the term, the New Public Management or "NPM" approach was based on the premise that the private sector was more proficient in its purchasing. As a result, the public sector began to look at emulating private sector practices as a means of achieving better results in key areas including savings.
The fact remains that the public sector is notably different from the private sector in several important areas, especially in terms of procurement - and more specifically relationship management.
Joining me today to talk about becoming relational in the public sector is one of our industry's top experts Kate Vitasek.
