The politics of ethnic avoidance -- how elected officials of one ethnic group limit their policy activity that is acutely useful to that same one -- is today’s topic.
Much has been made of Barack Obama’s ascension to the presidency as a marker in American race relations. There were lurking questions among some of his conservative critics who argued that he would show favoritism to African Americans. Two generations ago, however, more than a few observers raised similar questions about another American ethnic, Senator John F. Kennedy, as he sought the presidency. Would Kennedy, as President, take orders from the Vatican? My guest today has recently published a book that compares these two historical presidential campaigns and offers some interesting thoughts on what they say about America. Robert C. Smith is Professor of Political Science at San Francisco State University and the author of numerous books and articles on various angles of American politics. His latest is John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, and the Politics of Ethnic Incorporation and Avoidance.
We open with cast from Multi-Ethnic Theatre's production of August Wilson's Jitney, running through August 31 at the Gough Street Playhouse, 1620 Gough Street (near Bush), in San Francisco. From www.wehavemet.org: "Some of the most talented Bay Area actors are people with day jobs who work in theater for sheer passion and true meaning. Jitney, set in the 'early fall of 1977,' in the Hill District in Pitsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a play about working class men, who provide 'transportation service' to their communities. Then and now, city cabs did not venture into certain communities. This play allows MET actors to bring their real life experience to the stage. The cast is a close knit group passionately dedicated to stories about an important public service: gypsy cab rides to and from African American communities." Joining us are: BENNIE LEWIS as Becker, a well respected man who runs the Jitney Station; VERNON MEDEARIS as Turnbo, a jitney driver who is always interested in the business of others; CHARLES JOHNSON as Doub, a longtime jitney driver and Korean war veteran; CHARLES JOHNSON as Doub, a longtime jitney driver and Korean war veteran; TREVOR LAWRENCE as Fielding, a jitney driver and former tailor with a dependency on alcohol; STUART ELWYN HALL as Shealy, a numbers taker who often uses the jitney station as his base; ANTHONY PRIDE, as Philmore, a hotel doorman and recurring jitney passenger; DAVID STEWART, Becker's son, recently released from prison.
We close with a show from the archives (4/3/14) which features Joanna Haigood and cast members, Antoine Hunter and Travis Santell Rowland, speaking about Haigood's piece Dying While Black and Brown.

Ukrainians and their relationships with their neighbors through the centuries. How did Ukraine become Slavic? Just how extensive was Hitler's role in the sufferings of Ukrainians in 1941-44?
The Goths, the Huns and the Khazars all settled in the area at different times;
The Varangians (Scandinavians) arrived around 880 and created the most powerful state in Europe: Kievan Rus;
It was devastated by a 13th Century Mongol invasion and eventually succeeded by the state of Galicia-Volhynia;
Lithuanians and Poles controlled vast estates in Ukraine, the Cossacks led an uprising and Russians moved into the Crimea;
Hitler reunites Eastern Galicia and Volhynia with Ukraine
What led to the violent ethnic cleansing between Poles and Ukrainians in Volhynia 1943;
Why the spirit of extreme nationalism contradicted the concept of the Slavic nations and National Socialist Germany fighting the Soviets together.
