Social enterprise has a long history, dating back to the 1800’s, though under different names. The first use of the term ‘social enterprise’ can be traced to Beechwood College in Leeds, England around 1978. Social Enterprise first appeared in the US around 1983. It carries a history of misconception and alignment with many thinking it means a not for profit. However, social enterprise is more aligned with strategies versus a particular corporate structure. That also may contribute to the slow rise of understanding its benefits. Companies can be identified and documented using these strategies as far back as the 1800’s. However using the concept as the foundation and core of business practices was not the emphasis. It was a side-effect of other activities. In the US during the mid 1980’s the first social enterprise conference was held for the business sector and papers then emerged on social enterprise for nonprofits. Our special guest for this show is Steve Burns, COO of EM Squared, a social enterprise dedicated to ending childhood malnutrition. EM Squared is the first Social Entrepreneur 3.0 business. But what does that mean? In the book Social Entrepreneurship: What Everyone Needs to Know, author David Bornstein defines today's social entrepreneurship as Social entrepreneurship 3.0. It looks beyond individual founders and institutions to the change-making potential of ALL people and their interactions. It recognizes that social entrepreneurship is contagious. Steve will share how his company is transforming business, one food bar at a time.
For years, charitable organizations have gone hat in hand to the wealthy, middle class and poor alike to generate the money to fund their good works. But is this model outdated? And is there an easier, more reliable way to create income for philanthropies?
Our guest, Sam Caster, has successfully run an international charitable organization that has provided millions of servings of micronutrients to children in 86 different countries - including children in North Korea. Yet in 2008, with the collapse of the economy, he saw 70% of his funding disappear. Faced with the instability of relying on discretionary income, he wondered if there were a better way to generate income to serve the children. And he found it.
He will share how he has created a unique funding model that uses the engine of private enterprise to fuel his dream of ending childhood malnutrition while providing sustainable income for any nonprofit organization.
