Engineering for Kids comes from the mind of educator Dori Roberts. With an extensive educational background in math and technology education, Roberts taught engineering at the high school level for 11 years. During her teaching career, she saw a dire need for math, science and engineering programs. To fill this void, she started an afterschool club that participated in various engineering and science-based competitions.
After membership hit 180 students and the group won multiple state championships, she decided to tailor the program and apply it to a wider age demographic. With the extremely positive response she received from parents and administrators, Roberts saw a great business opportunity, leaving the teaching profession and devoting 100 percent of her time to developing the Engineering for Kids program.
Today, Engineering for Kids offers a suite of programs for children ages 4 to 14 introducing them to science, technology, engineering and math through a variety of workshops all aimed at developing problem solving skills. Programs include after school programs, evening classes, in-school field trips, workshops, birthday parties, home-school programs, scouts workshops, and pre-school programs.
Engineering for Kids began when she noticed that there was a lack of engineering programs in the area to enroll her then 6 and 8 year old children. We will speak with Dori Robers about this interesting franchise concept.
In this episode, I'll discuss how you can use everyday situations to teach your children about responsible money management in age appropriate ways. You can educate your kids about budgeting, prices, and sales tax at the grocery store. You can explain mortages, interest rates, student loans and credit cards to your teenagers. Paying your children commissions for doing their chores will help them make the connection between work and money at an early age. Teaching your kids about money can be a fun, hands-on experience for both of you!
TONIGHT'S SHORT TAKE WILL BE ABOUT A SPECIAL PEEVE OF MINE: THE PERILS OF DINING OUT. AND NO, IN THIS SHORT OPINION PIECE I'M NOT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE RESTAURANT OR THE WAIT STAFF. LET'S JUST ASSUME THAT THE FOOD IS EXCELLENT, THE SERVICE IS GREAT AND THE AMBIANCE OF THE LAYOUT AND ACCOUTREMENTS OF THE ESTABLISHMENT ARE SUPERB. WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT IS THE BEHAVIOR, PRESENTATION AND ATTITUDE OF SOME OF THE DINERS WHO RUIN A NICE EVENING FOR EVERYONE. I KNOW THAT ALL OF US HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS.
SO JUST IMAGINE....A GREAT RESTAURANT FILLED WITH NICE, WELL MANNERED AND PRESENTABLE PEOPLE WHO RECOGNIZE MY RIGHT AND YOURS NOT TO BE THROWN INTO "GRAND CENTRAL STATION AT RUSH HOUR". IF YOU'RE IN A RUSH THERE ARE PLENTY OF DECENT FAMILY ORIENTED FACILITIES THAT MEET YOUR NEEDS AS WELL AS UNTOLD FAST FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS. THERE ARE ALSO MANY PLACES THAT ESPECIALLY CATER TO KIDS, SO CONSIDER THAT AS WELL.
AS RODNEY DANGERFIELD SAID: "I DON'T GET NO RESPECT". YOU NEVER WANT TO LEAVE A GOOD RESTAURANT FEELING THAT WAY.
THE SHOW WILL ACTUALLY START AT 9:02 EASTERN. I HOPE YOU'LL JOIN ME. DINING OUT, JUST ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF THE THINGS WE DO IN LIFE AND LIVING IT.

Tonight's special guest is Connie Valentine, M.S. from Davis, CA, a survivor and activist representing the CA Protective Parents Association where the mission is to protect children from incest and family violence through research, advocacy and education. They work primarily with non-offending parents in custody disputes when children report physical or sexual abuse. Connie writes, "I am a survivor of extreme abuse. I was amnestic for all of it until middle age but had many of the symptoms of a trauma survivor. After a long arduous recovery, I am finally happy, joyous and free." And she's dedicating her self to this worthy issue. "Parental alienation groups are not what they seem," she says. "The term is used to strip children from mothers trying to protect the children from physical and sexual abuse, and give the children to the abusers both in family court and CPS. They are the exact opposite of real child protection." A message on the CPPA web site explains, "You may be told that you have to "accept" the court's decision when your child is placed with the identified abuser. No moral citizen should be expected to accept what is wholly unacceptable: the willful sacrifice of a child to a life of rape and/or battery." It concludes, " On our website you will find information, case histories, articles, resources, research and links to other websites. You will also find ideas, a growing community of protective parents, friendships, and a glimmer of hope in this dark world in which you find yourself."

Join Jed and Tim as they talk to Angela Walker and other Milwaukee public school advocates. What plans are there to fight back against Sen. Alberta Darling's and Rep. Dale Kooyenga's suburban delusion—that white politicians from outside of Milwaukee know what's best for diverse populations?
We will also talk about the FACT that what's good for Milwaukee just might be good for all of Wisconsin's public schools.

Fury Road is killing it in theaters. Yet, SO many people I talk to have NEVER SEEN the original trillogy!
Say it ain't so! We're gonna talk all about the original films and dig deep into the post-apocolyptic-amazingness that is the Mad Max universe! The football shoulder-pads, krimped 80's hairstyles, killer boomerang weapons thrown by the Ferral Kid, beefcake-hockey-masked-leaders, nitrus-fueled-muscle-cars and bug-eyed-nasty-car-wrecks ... all that stuff.
Check out the real-life Thunderdome pics in our slide show from Death Guild! David King is the owner of Death Guild night club in SF, he's one of the founders of the Thunderdome at Burning Man!!
We also cover an intriguing theory about Max in this new movie. IS this Max?!
