Join me and my guest Lizzy Miles M.A., MSW. as we discuss a day in the life of a social worker. There's a quiet revolution happening in the way we die. Almost half of all Americans now die in hospice care, often at home, and a vast industry has sprung up to meet the growing demands.
More than 76 million baby boomers are starting to turn 65 and 97% of Americans want to be better informed about end-of-life care. Join me and my guests Fran Smith and Sheila Himmel, authors of Changing The Way We Die: Compassionate End-of-Life Care and the Hospice movement, as they share their personal stories of loss and end-of-life choices. http://changingthewaywedie.com/hospice/
Our guest, Jim Bouchard, is the Director of Marketing & Development for Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice (AHCH). Your hosts, Burl and Merry, received compassionate support in caring for Burl’s mother, Mary Ann Hall, during the final months of her life from AHCH. In gratitude, we wish to share the empatheic and responsive care Mary Ann and we, as caregivers, received with our listeners.
AHCH “cares for the health, independence, and quality of life of Maine residents and their families in the comfort of their home and community. When a person is ill or homebound, the power to heal involves more than medical treatment. It's also the touch of a hand or the warmth of a smile.” The agency has a longstanding community service mission focused on building and sustaining a continuum of in-home services to address the acute, long-term and end-of-life care needs of individuals and their families.
Hospice emphasizes palliative rather than curative treatment; quality rather than quantity of life. The dying are comforted. Professional medical care is given, and sophisticated symptom relief provided. Hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death.
We are especially moved by the final days Mary Ann and we spent at Hospice House, thoughtfully designed to be sensitive to the needs of patients and their families, "allowing family members to be relieved of the role of caregiver and focus solely on gathering together to support their loved one.”

This Week: End of life care is something all pet parents must face.
Dr. Dani McVety, co-founder Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice and In-Home Euthanasia will be joining me to discuss the advantages of hospice care at home and what occurs at a home euthanasia.
Lap of Love is a network of 50 compassionate and empathetic veterinarians in 33 locations across 16 states whose goal is to empower every guardian to care for their geriatric and terminally ill pets. Their philosophy centers around the human-animal bond and the need for that bond to be as undisturbed as possible during this most difficult time.
Dr. McVety is a speaker, consultant, author, and mother. With a deep love for the human-animal bond, she enjoys just about anything that has to do with pets! Although she originally wanted to practice equine medicine, volunteer time with human hospice steered her on a different path. After graduating veterinary school (University of Florida), she practiced emergency medicine and gained a greater understanding of how to help families at a time in which they felt the most helpless. This has become her greatest fulfillment in veterinary medicine; helping to ease the stress and fear of the people that love their animals.
