SORT BY Relevancy
We focus a lot on response in EMS. Our response allong with our training can effect patient outcomes. But what about when response is the focus without equal attention to training. Getting there is only part of what we do, yet is often the one marker that is looked at when it comes to a patients outcome.
This week we talk about EMS response, call types, training and how they reflect on patient outcomes.
Does the 8-10 minute response have a positive impact or is it better training and equipment?

Fire Engineering EMS editor Mike McEvoy talks with John Sponholtz, RN, CHPN, AEMT (Tisch Mills FD, Wisconsin) who is a hospice case manager and author of an upcoming article on EMS response to hospice patients. This prerecorded episode will enlighten you on the various kinds of hospice and palliative care, hospice meds, POSLT and Do Not Resuscitate orders as well as why you should be communicating with hospice any time you respond to one of their patients.

On Monday, May 4 we completed a special live broadcast of Wisconsin EMS Live. Guests included: Dr. Eugene Nagel, Randolph Mantooth and Nancy McFarland.
The 60 minute program was dedicated to discussing the start of Paramedic systems, those responsible for its rise in the 1960's and 70's, the determination and vision it took, and based on their experiences how they see the industry evolving into Community Paramedicine!
Eugene Nagel is a retired anesthesiologist. He was an innovative pioneer who served as medical director for the City of Miami Fire Department's rescue operation from 1964 to 1974. During those 10 years, Dr. Nagel developed the first paramedic program utilizing telemetry and voice medical control. The biophone or “orange box” was a familiar piece of equipment on the TV show EMERENCY! The TV show’s unit now resides on display at the Smithsonian Institute.
Randolph Mantooth is an actor, producer and speaker. Widely known for his role as Paramedic John Gage in the TV series EMERGENCY! -- the show that transformed America's perception and approach to emergency medical care in the 1970s and introduced millions to the word "paramedic" for the first time. Mr. Mantooth is a popular speaker at Fire and EMS events, and an advocate for firefighter health and safety. His website is www.RandolphMantooth.com.
Nancy McFarland is a retired LA County Fire Museum board director and Chair of the Pioneers of Paramedicine Committee. Ms. McFarland was instrumental in uniting the four doctors credited with starting the first (fire-based) paramedic programs in the United States in the late 1960s for taped interviews and a Lifetime Achievement Awards Gala in May of 2010.
The Pioneers of Paramedicine website and video is located at http://pioneersofparamedicine.com/
This week we discuss the language of EMS. Using profesional communication as a standard vs communicating amoungst each other with common EMS slang. Is there a place for EMS slang or should we do away with it and focus on a standard of communication that leaves no room for error?
We also plan on talking about EMS Facebook pages and the culture of negativity as well as answer a few questions sent in by listeners.

I want to create a Right Response Radio background. Why do we have this show and what do we believe?
It will be a good link to send folks to who wonder how does a Right wing Cristian Conservative realy think.
There is a lot of bad representation out there.
WE AMERICANS ARE VERY SPOILED. NO MATTER WHAT DISASTROUS SITUATIONS WE MIGHT SEE AROUND US, WE ALWAYS ASSUME THAT IT CAN'T HAPPEN TO US. UNFORTUNATELY, ONCE THE DISASTER STRIKES, IT IS OFTEN TOO LATE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT AND WE BECAME DEPENDENT UPON THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP US.
WE'VE SEEN ALL TOO OFTEN THAT THE PEOPLE WHO COME OUT OF TRAGEDY THE FASTEST ARE THE ONES WHO DEVELOP A PLAN OF ACTION FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES. THEY ARE READY AS MUCH AS THEY CAN BE AND THE DISASTER IS OF MUCH LESS CONSEQUENCE. LIVES ARE SAVES, LIFE IS ABLE TO GO ON AND THE ENSUING HARD WORK TO RECOVER IS MUCH MORE MANAGEABLE. AFTER ALL, WHEN WE'RE OUT OF FOOD, WATER AND BASIC SHELTER IT IS HARD TO SURVIVE FOR LONG.
TODAY THE TYPES OF POTENTIAL DISASTER FACING US HAVE GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY. IN ADDITION TO FLOODS, HURRICANES, TORNADOES AND EARTHQUAKES, WE NOW SEE AN INCREASE IN MOB RIOTING ACTION, THREATS FROM FOREIGN ENTITIES WHO TRULY HATE AMERICA AS WELL AS THE POTENTIAL FOR A DEADLY AIR ASSAULT WHICH EVEN INCLUDES AN EMP BURST.
IN THIS EPISODE OF NORTH FLORIDA WRITER TALKS, MARK COLLIER JOINS ME TO TALK ABOUT THE THINGS WE NEED TO DO TO BE PREPARED FOR THAT HORRIBLE EVENT THAT WE HOPE NEVER HAPPENS. BUT LIFE CHANGES RAPIDLY, SO IT'S IMPORTANT TO PLAN AHEAD. JOIN ME, JAMES DICK, YOUR HOST WITH NORTH FLORIDA WRITER TALKS FOR WHAT I AM SURE WILL BE A ROUSING DISCUSSION. DON'T BE FEARFUL, JUST REALIZE THE CHALLENGES OUT THERE AND DO YOUR PART TO BE READY. FOR IN THE FIRST PERIOD OF TIME AFTER A DISASTER, YOU ARE REALLY ON YOUR OWN. GET YOUR "GAME PLAN" READY. SELF PRESERVATION IS AN INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY MATTER. YOU OWE IT TO YOUR LOVED ONES TO DO WHAT YOU MUST TO CARE FOR THEM.

In light of the recent devastating earthquake in Kathmandu, Spectre and Rock have had several requests for a recap of our emergency/disaster preparedness show. Rather than replay the archived show, we're incorporating the info from past shows and guests and answering additional questions in this episode. This would be the Grand Poobah of all our emergency prep shows, so to speak.
