Although I only concentrate on two negative emotions (conceit and pride) in the second book, empathy is well worth mentioning. It also isn't what we typically make it out to be. Empathy isn't really an emotion, it's just that the emotional aspect of it is what we automatically see.
To be empathetic, or to honestly try and see from an alternate perspective, takes more of your conscious than your subconscious. We dwell on the subconscious aspect of empathy however. We realize our sadness, sympathy, and the way it makes us feel, while ignoring the most important ability that got us there.
I'll talk about why that conscious aspect of empathy is so important, and how if we take it for what it is, being empathetic to other perspectives can be great, but being empathetic to your own can be much better. Many times we don't stop and think about and emote for our own existence. Looking at your self without only seeing what's attached to it, can cause more of you (including your empathy) to come forward in to the world.

Empathy is often defined as the ability to “put oneself into another's shoes”. It's fascinating how diverse and varied other people define empathy. Wikipedia define it as the capability to share and understand another person's emotions and feelings. Miriam-Webster define empathy as the act of understanding, being aware of, beings sensitive to and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts and experience of another, either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner. The Latin word compassio veraque meaning compassion and true, best outline the word empathy. In layman's term it is the overwhelming power to feel another person's emotion as if they are your own.
em·pa·thy - noun \'em-p?-the\ : the feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions : the ability to share someone else's feelings.
One of the traits common to healers is some degree of empathy. As everything holds both light and shadow, the ability to feel the emotions of others as if they are your own can be both a gift and a hindrance. While empathy can enhance the connection between a practitioner and a person receiving healing work, it can also leave the healer open to a flood of emotions that can be at best disruptive and at worst disabling.
EMPATHY CAN BE MANAGED!
On today's episode, we'll explore learning how you can transform empathy from a reflex to a choice. will share exercises that will enable you to not only decide if your empathy is needed, but also choose how much empathy you need for each situation!
Some great information on today's program -- the last until September -- including information on collaborating with kids on social difficulties. But one parent told us, by email, about something she and her husband do with her son when it doesn't seem like there's a problem to be solved but their son does need to be heard: they call it the Empathy Corner.
Buddha says, Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed. Sympathy is the heightened awareness of another’s plight such as I’m sorry for your loss. Empathy is the ability to step into the shoes of another person, attempting to understand their feelings and perspectives. Compassion goes a step further, where you first feel empathy and then a desire to help alleviate the suffering of another. Compassion is used to express the same feeling as empathy, but you have a desire to take action. Over the last decade, neuroscientists have identified an empathy circuit in our brains which, if damaged, can curtail our ability to understand what other people are feeling. Evolutionary biologists have shown that humans are social animals who have naturally evolved to care for each other, like our primate cousins. Psychologists feel that we are primed for empathy by strong attachment relationships in the first two years of life. Empathy is a topic for scientists, business leaders, educaters, and political activists. According to research, empathy is a habit we should cultivate to improve the quality of our own lives. The buzz stems from a revolutionary shift in the science of how we understand human nature. The old view that we are essentially self-interested creatures is being nudged firmly to the side by evidence that we are also wired for empathy, social cooperation, and mutual aid. Join me and Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera as we discuss this topic. After the show, check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live.

“Empathy is the ability to understand and connect not just with others but also self-empathy and self-connection, what’s going on inside of ourselves. It’s becoming aware of what’s going on inside our inner world. It’s also going the next step to connect thoughts and feelings to needs.” – Marie Miyashiro

Journey to Empathy
Empathy in Mediation with Martin Golder interview by Mary Damianakis
Empathy is a way of relating to others around you that recognizes the oneness of a common humanity. Sympathy is felt for the 'other'.
The journey that I have been on is from a somewhat sociopathic approach to my fellow beings in which I came to recognize that empathy was about the most powerful tool in the human spectrum. Mechanical empathy is a way to apply empathy in a situation in which you may not feel it. Gradually the practice of mechanical empathy shifts the practitioner into a truly empathic person. The brain plasticity responds to practice, practice, practice by shifting the 'going through the motions' into a true and easy feeling of genuine oneness with all life forms.
There might have been a time when your young mind and heart said, “heck no, I can change the world”. What happened to that young mind? Because of not being taught by example that this world was designed to fill your every heartfelt need, you began to believe the hype of not enough. Today you may find the beliefs of that child within are still very much alive and triggered frequently in your life, causing you to respond in unexpected (and often undesired) ways. Come hear how a bit of empathy for that inner child can help change your life and bring you to fuller joy!
