Host Cyrus Webb welcomes author Emily Wierenga to Conversations LIVE to discuss her literary journey and the new book A PROMISE IN PIECES.
I am a wife, mother, and believer.
I am an eating disorder survivor, who makes art with words and paint.
I have two books coming out, this year and next, on the eating disorder journey. The first is 'Chasing Silhouettes: How to Help a Loved One Battling an Eating Disorder' (Ampelon, 2012), and the second, co-authored by Dr. Dena Cabrera, is 'Mom in the Mirror: Body Image, Beauty and Life After Pregnancy' (Rowman and Littlefield, 2013).
My first book, 'Save My Children: The Story of a Father's Love,' was published by Castle Quay Books in September of 2008.
I am represented by Sandra Bishop of MacGregor Literary. I also serve as a volunteer counselor through FINDINGbalance and am a Navigator with the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA).
I am a monthly columnist for the Christian Courier, arts feature editor for TS Poetry, regular contributor to A Deeper Story, and a paid contributor to The High Calling. A former associate editor, ghostwriter and staff writer, I have written for Christianity Today (Kyria), Christian Week, Faith Today, Adbusters, Geez, The Anglican Planet, Focus on the Family, Christian Courier, and In Touch, in addition to having served as copy editor for the Christian Courier.
In May of 2012 my news story for Faith Today, "Parents Forgive their Child's Abductor," took first place in the Canadian Church Press Awards. According to Judge Mark Bourrie, "This is a very moving piece. The sense of joy, hope, faith and forgiveness that comes through simply grabs the heart. An inspiring story. Wierenga captures the terror of every parent's worst fear and tells how the parents of Kienan Hebert's faith never wavered in spite of the tremendous test that it faced. Told with sensitivity, care and skill. "
She was a home-schooled pastor’s daughter who wasn’t allowed to play with Barbies or dance. Her mum made sure there would be nothing that could tempt her daughter to be vain, or to contract an eating disorder. So she went ahead and got one anyway.
At the age of nine, Emily Wierenga began to restrict her food intake, and by the time she was 13, she was so severely anorexic nurses were surprised she was still alive.
Chasing Silhouettes: How to Help a Loved One Battling an Eating Disorder is the story of a broken family that finds healing through an eating disorder. It’s the story of how even good Christians need redemption, and how eating disorders pervade all homes—even the seemingly perfect ones.
A unique resource, it addresses the whole of the illness: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, providing shocking insight into the disordered eater’s mind that no other book will offer.
In addition to a stirring personal narrative, Chasing Silhouettes is comprised of advice from some of the nation’s top eating disorder experts, sample prayers for when yours run out, as well as stories of others who’ve battled—and overcome—eating disorders

WHY DON’T BOY SCOUTS SELL COOKIES? THINK ABOUT THAT!!
Ever since we can remember, the girl scouts have always sold cookies and the boy scouts did not.
But I differ on the “accepted” and “acceptable” reasons why girls sell “cookies” and boys do not.
Tune into the show and share your thoughts with me. We are officially entering our 2nd year in radio with a new line-up, a new format, and new segments. As the host, I’m going to share with you
“the real reason” why I think that girl scouts sell cookies and boy scouts do not! It’s not complicated.
Also on the show will be Special Guest, health coach Sharon Chavers from The Integrative Nutrition Institute will be in the studio.
As always, in the studio with me will be my Co-Host Sybil Marie Presley. Dial into the show and speak with my guest and ask questions, talk with me and Sybil, or tell us your comments.

Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of London’s East End from August through November of 1888 in what is dubbed the ‘Autumn of Terror’. However, the grisly ripping of Polly Nichols on August 31st was not the first unsolved murder of the year. The April murder of Emma Smith and the August murder of Martha Tabram both occurred on bank holidays. They baffled the police and press alike and were assumed by the original investigators to have been the first murders in the series. Where they correct? In this provocative work of literary archeology, author Tom Wescott places these early murders in their proper historical context and digs to unearth new evidence and hard facts not seen in over 125 years. The Bank Holiday Murders is the only book of its kind. It eschews the tired approach of unsatisfying ‘final solutions’ in favor of solid research, logical reasoning and new information. The clues followed are not drawn from imagination but from the actual police reports and press accounts of the time. The questions asked by Wescott are ones first suggested by the original investigators but lost to time until now. The answers provided are compelling and sometimes explosive. Among the revelations are: • New information linking the murders of Smith & Tabram to the same killer(s). • Proof that the police did not believe key witnesses in either case. • Proof that at least one of these witnesses was working with the murderer. • New evidence connecting many of the victims that may lead to their actual slayers. • Information on Emily Horsnell, the ACTUAL first Whitechapel murder victim. • The hidden truth of ‘Leather Apron’ and its role in unraveling the Ripper mystery. • Proof of a corrupt police sergeant who thwarted the investigation. Was he protecting the Ripper? THE BANK HOLIDAY MURDERS: The True Story of the First Whitechapel Murders-Tom Wescott.
