Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1169

    in Self Help

SPECIAL TOPIC Night - OPEN MIKE SHOW - "For Our Kids" - Deborah Maddison and Tracy Baxter, Canadian activists from British Columbia, will join Bill Murray to lead this evening's discussion about the Rights of Children and Families in North America. This will be an open topic, Q & A discussion-style show, one without as clearly defined specific issues as our regular "For Our Kids" episodes. The "open mike" style show is looser than the planned ones we've been doing in this series, but we're hoping to attract call-in participants who wish to talk about their experience in dealing with "the system." Many of the institutions designed to serve and protect our children are in need of close scrutiny and examinations. Others are, in fact, denying the civil rights of our children. Some may need to be dismantled completely, replaced with organizations that actually have the needs of our kids, not themselves, at their core. There's been a lot of unnecessary suffering due to the fact that many such groups have commonly operated in an almost untouchable position in North America for decades, as if they were "above the law" .. and this has to stop. ~~ We're pleased "For Our Kids" co-host Deborah Maddison will be back for the next show. ~~ Every two weeks a new THEME will be presented in this series, with frequent special guests speaking from their own experience. ~~ Please see our web page at: www.NAASCA.org/ForOurKids or write to: naasca.forourkids@gmail.com

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 1168

    in Self Help

Tonight's special guests are Alan and Barbara Cohen from Connecticut, husband and wife. He's an attorney and author (aka Avi Morris) who's written about the experience of being a foster father in his book "Crocodile Mothers Eat Their Young". Barbara's a now-retired teacher, a middle-school language arts and literacy specialist who continues to teach adult literacy classes. It was her observations of children being removed from abusive homes that led the couple to become foster parents. They began fostering teens after their own three sons were grown and on their own. Their experience with a girl and her sister became the models for the novel's main characters, which has led them to become speakers at various foster care foster care and child abuse advocacy groups. Alan and Barbara's family has not been immune from the ravages of child abuse and trauma. Their niece survived the abuses of her grandfather, but is now a major success story. There were extreme bumps along the way, including she and her younger brother becoming wards of the state after falling into drug abuse. She attempted suicide twice before age 17, and was sent to a year long rehab. When she emerged she was dedicated to sobriety, finished high school with a GED, and got straight "A"s in a community college. Her brother, who Alan and Barbara fostered, is the other side of the coin. He is still struggling with drug abuse and in the process lost an academic scholarship to a good university. "In the meantime," Alan reports, "the grandfather's abuse pretty well tore apart the whole immediate family. There are many victims of one person's abuse."

WOMEN, PROTECTION ORDERS, AND THE REAL COSTS TO VICTIMS

You’ve experienced violence from your partner, and everyone is telling you to get a protection order. Sounds right. The legal aid representative tells you how to proceed, it might help, and it doesn’t cost anything. Or does it?

Two researchers looked at whether getting a protection order had any impact on women’s earnings, and their findings may be a shock. And those findings covered six years of women’s earnings. Free to get a protection order? Think again.

Melanie M. Hughes and Lisa D. Brush join us to look at their research and what it told them about women’s financial picture after getting a protection order. Hughes is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh. She uses quantitative approaches to study women’s empowerment, often focusing on groups of women who are particularly marginalized. She is coauthor of Women, Politics, and Power: A Global Perspective (3rd Edition forthcoming with CQ Press). Her research has been published in journals such as American Sociological Review, American Political Science Review, and Social Forces.

Brush is Professor of Sociology and of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Her first book was Gender and Governance (Rowman and Littlefield 2003), and her second book was Poverty, Battered Women, and Work in U.S. Public Policy (Oxford University Press 2011). Her current research looks at preventing adolescent relationship abuse and teen dating violence by engaging high school and middle school boys in coached athletic programs to change masculinities.
