Johanna Kandel brings knowledge, hope and assistance to more than 200,000 individuals internationally.  She facilitates weekly support groups, mentors individuals with eating disorders and their families through their treatment and recovery, educates thousands about eating disorders, and advocates for legislation on the state and national level.  Johanna is the current President of the Board of Directors for the Eating Disorders Coalition, member of the Academy for Eating Disorders Advisory Board, and a founding board member of the Eating Disorders Activist Network.  She has received numerous awards for her public service, has been profiled in the New York Times and leading magazines, and has made several appearances on national TV, including NBC Nightly News and The Today Show.     PTSD and Eating Disorders: Treatment and Healing

    Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is driven by two major needs: 1) to feel safe, 2) to be in control. While survivors seek ways to manage their experience of the world they often find that controlling themselves offers immediate sensations of relief. It's no surprise that eating -- an essential survival behavior -- can lead to distorted coping mechanisms in the PTSD lifestyle.


    PTSD has proven to be a main predictor in eating disorders.
