A Palm Beach County jury returned to court early Tuesday to begin deciding the case of Stephen Maiorino, who could face life in prison if convicted on allegations that he raped a 20-year-old Wellington woman while on duty last year.

The panel began deliberating Monday, ending an emotional week-long trial surrounding what Maiorino’s attorneys say was consensual sex in October between the 36-year-old former officer and a woman he offered to drive back to the police station after her friend was arrested and his car towed.

About an hour into their deliberations Tuesday, jurors at about 10 a.m. asked Circuit Judge Samantha Schosberg Feuer to define a few words in the law for unlawful compensation or reward for official behavior, the last of the four charges Maiorino faces.

Maiorino has also been charged with two counts of armed sexual battery and an armed kidnapping charge.

The question on the last charge could mean that the four men and two women on the jury have decided the other parts of the case.

  • Traveling Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania beyond the steel industry

    in Travel

The famous biographer, James Parton, once referred to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as "Hell with the lid off", but today the city is vibrant, colorful and celebrated.

The Senator John Heinz History Center traces its roots back to 1879, making it the oldest cultural institution in Western Pennsylvania. The museum and research facility presents over 250 years of Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania life and it’s quest for storytelling is supported by the affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution.  On a recent visit to Pittsburgh we sat down with Brady Smith from the History Center, who shared how Western Pennsylvania helped author some of America’s most compelling historical stories.

Pittsburgh was a main destination of the African-American Great Migration and that southern exodushern exodus produced a cultural mecca in the Hill District. The community inspired playwrights, musicians and Hollywood as it was the setting for the television series “Hill Street bBues”.   Marimba Milliones from the Hill Community Development Corporation tells us that remnants of the Hill District’s cultural mosaic during it’s hey-days from 1920 to the 1940s, can be seen today in landmarks that once housed synagogues and other places of worship, and in the architecture of some of the historic structures that accent the community.

Built in 1907 along the Monongahela River, Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7 still stand tall and they offer a rare look into early 19th century iron-making technology. Since the collapse of Pittsburgh’s steel industry in the 1980s, the Carrie Furnaces remain the only non-operative blast furnaces in the area.

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Drummer/Producer/Arranger EC3!

    in Music

This will not be the first time that EC3 has visited our show.  Every time he drops by, there is always exciting news to share! And this time is no different - but let's back track....

EC was born in Naples, the son of a respected tenor saxophonist, composer and arranger.  Early in his life, little Ernest must have decided to follow in his Dad's footsteps.  He was the youngest graduate of the Naval School of Music - and he flew from there!  There was work to be had in Los Angeles, but the call of Las Vegas proved to be a turning point in this drummer's career.  EC met Vincent Falcone, who had been Frank Sinatra's legendary pianist.  And he met Loretta Holloway, a much respected vocalist - who was looking for someone just like our guest.  EC became Ms. Holloway's Music Director - and shouldered some huge shows with her for over 12 years.  It was common to share the stage with Don Rickles, Jay Leno and David Brenner, among many others.

One of the biggest introductions that EC ever had was when he met bass master, Al McKibbon.  Al and EC had a connection that lasted for years.  Because of their intense working relationship - sometimes via 18 shows a week! - our Friend developed a fabulous set of career and life skills that have stayed with him.  And that has most certainly helped with the creation of his multiple projects.  When we first met EC, he was making the rounds of various venues in support of his "Her Eyes at Sunset."  Then, it was "It's All About the Rhythm."  Now, there's a new set of tunes - very much in the swinging, sassy, and Jazz-loving EC3 style.  It's called "My Rhythmic Point of View" and it's going to make you get UP and bossa your socks off ;)  We've got our talented visitor in-house to tell us all about it - on 10/6 - join us!
