Dr. Francesca Gino on how to make wise decisions and stick to them

    in Psychology

Amy Alkon's Advice Goddess Radio: "Nerd Your Way To A Better Life!" with the best brains in science.

Adorably, we humans see ourselves as rational animals. Research shows us to be anything but.

We are swayed in ways we wouldn’t expect in both our decision-making and how well we stick to our plans.

The good news is, the research also shows that our going off track happens in predictable ways. My guest tonight, Harvard Business School professor, Dr. Francesca Gino, will both lay out the forces that sidetrack us as we’re trying to accomplish our goals and offer guidelines that we can use to keep ourselves on track.

Dr. Gino will be discussing her recently-published book, Sidetracked: Why Our Decisions Get Derailed, and How We Can Stick to the Plan. Join us tonight and have your eyes opened about the psychological, social, and environmental stumbling blocks that keep us from getting where we want to go.

Join me and all my fascinating guests every Sunday, 7-8 p.m. Pacific Time, 10-11 p.m. Eastern Time, at blogtalkradio.com/amyalkon or subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher.

Please buy my science-based but funny book about why people are rude and how to change things, "Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck."

And please ask a newspaper near you to carry my award-winning syndicated, science-based advice column...if they don't already.

Raising the Mandingo Man Child ( Mother's Relationships with Sons)part 2

    in Music

Raising the Mandingo Man Child ( Mother's Relationships with their Sons)With or without a husband or man in the household, raising a male child can be challenging for a woman. She wants to protect him from the world, prepare him to be a positive and responsible member of society, provide him with opportunities to succeed, pamper him with her love.

She has to deal with the forces and influences of society, whether the force is the school administration, officers of the law, the general community or her husband or her man or her family members. In his younger years, the bond is strong and they have a wonderful relationship. As he gets older, in his early teen or teen years, when he starts to feel himself, he begins to challenge her authority, act like the "man of the house" (that's what she called him) and suddenly there is conflict. When dad or father figure is in the home, some times, mom has protected her son against his advice, now the drama begins.

When dad is not in the house, many times mom will say in a militant tone, "I am sending you to your father," some times after having spoken negatively about his father all these years - a formula for disaster also.

How do we prepare our young men for success without emasculating them? Teach them survival skills so they will not depend on a woman or be desperate to find a woman to fill the place of mama? When should you stop breast feeding your son, allowing him to sleep in the bed with you, or allowing him to see you in the nude? When do you or should you teach him to cook, dance, hem his pants, wash and shop for his clothes?

Have a single mother, mother with a step father and mother with the birth father; also have a single father raising his son, father/exhusband without his son and a 30 year old raised by his mom on the show to discuss.

    Conflicts & Confusion in America

    in Politics

America is a nation of conflicts and confusion.

For example, many people proclaim America to be a Christian nation. And with that proclamation, one would imagine that the so-called "Christians" would seek every opportunity to help others who are in need. Instead, the American Way is to judge those at the very bottom, and to do so in order to justify turning a blind eye to their need.

And there are more conflicts and confusion in our everyday lives as Americans. We are walking, talking conundrums and other nations laugh at us.

Today on The Bridge Radio, we will discuss some of the most glaring conflicts of American people and the resulting confusion. Call in and discuss yours.

In addition, Tracy Powell will break down the reason why Net Neutrality is so important and provide understanding of the recent FCC action. Plus, DJ Gates will play some new music from artists you love.

Listen to The Bridge Radio Today at 4pm Pacific as we discuss Conflicts & Confusion In America. Join Award-Winning Author Darryl James and co-hosts Tracy Powell, Dr. John Hamilton, Marcus D. LeGall III and DJ Gates on one of the most intellectually stimulating shows on radio.

Tune in each Sunday at 4PM Pacific Time for "The Bridge," a smarter radio show.
